Re: Recommendations of True Crime books?
I recently finished reading a riveting true crime book, "The Road Out of Hell" by Anthony Flacco.

I'd also recommend Paddy Whacked for a history of the Irish mob in America.

Re: Recommendations of True Crime books?
Oh man, I read three new books this summer that made it onto my "top true crime books" shelf, but they're at the cottage and I don't think I can remember them. Oh, hold on, one was Joe McGinness's widely acknowledged classic about the Jeffrey McDonald murder case, Fatal Vision. The second was Vincent Bugliosi's very good Till Death Us Do Part.
The third was the best of the lot. Let me see if I can dig up the title. Got it! Widow's Web by Gene Lyons. Riveting and unbelievable story about Arkansas female psychopath Mary Lee Orsini. I highly recommend that lesser-known classic.

James Elroy's My Dark Places: An L.A. Crime Memoir is a really good read. Part investigative, part memoir, it's about the murder of his mother. You easily see why he's the guy he is today and why he writes the way he does and the stories he writes about.

Another great true crime book I read this summer was Bitter Blood by Jerry Bledsoe. Perfunctory title, but well-written and absorbing.

I read a book this summer called Bloody Lies that was excellent, and then wrote a way too long review of it. Here's a link to the Amazon version of that review.

Long story short, we had a case here in Nebraska where the police were trying to pin a murder on two individuals until, thanks to some great work by one investigator, the real killers were found. I don't read a lot of true crime, but maybe I should start, as I really enjoyed it (when I wasn't terrified).

Judgment Ridge: The True Story Behind the Dartmouth Murders by Dick Lehr and Mitchell Zuckoff is great book. I read it sometime last year.
