I've had two friends ask me what they should read recently, and I did the best I could, but I wasn't SURE they'd enjoy the books I suggested. Got any tried-and-true selections guaranteed to please?

We're going to sound like a broken record but these hard-fantasy ones from George R.R. Marting are good:

Game of Thrones (1st)
Clash of Kings (2nd)
(and the third book whose name temporarily escapes me)

Also, someone else in another thread suggested Greg Iles' "Black Cross" -- I read it on his suggestion and it was great. That one is WWII thriller

Anything more mainstream? I had one person say "I don't like things that are 'weird', and no books for boys". Whatever.

Michael Connelly for "mainstream."

Nora Roberts for some guilty pleasure stuff.

Robert Crais for some good old fashion private eye fun!

A Simple Plan by Scott Smith
I'll second that. Great read. 100X better than the film, too. I guess it's in the "thriller" genre but it rises way above it.

Eleven Days by Donald Harstad is also pretty good. Same genre.

Have you read Dark Rivers of the Heart? (much better IMO)

...Oh yeah, that is also the book that I always recommend to people.

If a female is asking the series by Janet Evanovich about a female bounty hunter is a good read. Very funny and entertaining. Men would probably like them also, but I think women can really relate to the main character.
