Really great thread, loads of stuff I need to check out. A couple I’d highly recommend would be JG Ballard’s Drowned World& his excellent but hard to find [b]Wind from Nowhere[/i] about a gradually escalating wind that strips the world throughout the course of the novel. Has a fantastic sense of "this could happen" and yet it’s not mentioned on any of the lists of previous books in the rundown in his new novels.

Also the classic Day of the Triffids and the even better (IMO) Kraken Wakes by John Wyndham.

Similar to Wyndham is John Christopher who seemingly specialised in different ways of destroying the world but two of his best are Death of Grass& World in Winter.

The only ones i can think of other than Swan Song (which i also recommend) are religious novels various friends, family, people on the street have tried to force on me. I read one of the Left Behind books and didn't like it much at all. However there is another religious book from a catholic perspective which actually wasn't too bad and kind of sucked me in. It's called Pierced By a Sword and you can even get it for free from the catholiccity website.

Another recomendation that someone mentioned i'd like to second is Lucifers Hammer - one of the few "hard" science fiction novels i read and really liked.

McCammon's "Swan Song"
King "The Stand"
Just wanted to back these two up. Both are absolutely wonderful. And being a huge Stephen King fan, I think I actually liked Swan Song more. These two are defenitely worth the read.

I agree, Scheherazade.

I'm a huge King fan, and thought "The Stand" was THE end of the world book. But when I read "Swan Song" I actually thought McCammon had out-Stand-ed The Stand.

As a sidebar, McCammon has written a number of incredible books (Boy's Life, Gone South specifically). It's a shame for fans that he retired from writing, but good for him.

you people have been great help. i don't i could possibly read all these books even if i had two men reading in shifts of 24hr/day 7days/week! I tried reading clancy's red storm rising, but couldn't get into it. I like on the beach so far. I wish mad max had some books to it like star trek does.
