Well I don't appreciate somebody saying that we get "suckered in" by the Criterion label and lap up whatever they drop on the floor. I'm a grown ass man and completely capable of deciding whether or not I like a movie without being influenced by a brand. I haven't seen anybody in this thread imply they gotta catch 'em all when it comes to the Criterion Collection. There have been plenty of Criterion movies I've rented and decided I didn't like them, and plenty that I'm not interested in watching even once.

If you really get that offended by something like that I'm not sure what to tell you. All I was getting at was it does seem like there is a certain segment of collectors who buy Criterions because of the label and not the quality of the actual films they're putting out. It wasn't really meant to be offensive to any one poster in particular but more or less a general comment. Anyways whatever if I offended you I'm sorry and I'll just leave it at that.

Anyway, that's not even a Criterion title (and can only be bought on blu-ray region free over in Germany to my knowledge)...back to topic
On the Criterion titles, I only have about a dozen titles (and I have over 500+ blus) from them. I by no means buy everything they are selling. But usually every B&N sale I get 1-2 titles. This sale just happens to be Thief (which I got last night) and Insomnia (I'll go get it on the week of the 22nd when it is released). Next sale in November, I'll go get Macbeth (comes out in September) but that will probably be it.

Criterion is going to release Eraserhead soon, and is working on a Mulholland Drive release after that, I hope they can get their hands on Lost Highway as well.

People collect things, most of us here "collect" movies generally. Some people "collect" Criterion or Masters of Cinema, or Fox Film Noir series, or baseball cards. If you number it, they will collect it.
Not a knock on anyone...I realize I'm a collector. But, for me it isn't based on label. It is usually based on director. I enjoy owning a director's filmography, I enjoy seeing progressions in style, etc. Some people buy movies b/c they like ordering by numbered spine, I don't think I, or anyone else that cares enough about a hobby to post on the internet can really judge that

Yes, yesterday I used the $5 off $50 coupon in conjunction with a 20% and several 15% coupons with no problems. Usually have had luck with the $8 Blu-ray/DVD coupons on titles that list over $40, but not so much with the $39.99 list titles. I also want to try getting Red River with the $8 coupon possibly Saturday or Sunday since it usually works with a little persuasion at the register.

I had 5 coupons and the clerk was cool enough to let me use them at the same time. I only used 4 though and gave the last one away to the wife. She used it to buy some Carpathian vampire/ werewolf mumbo jumbo book. I have a lot of titles I want to upgrade to blu ray, but I'll do that in November for the next sale.
I picked up:
Night of the Hunter (the only upgrade from my 98' MGM DVD)
Seconds
Paths of Glory (finally have every Kubrick film on blu except Spartacus. Hurry up Criterion!)
Thief
All are blind buys except NOTH.

I was able to use a 20% today at the one location I've had the most problems with for coupons in the past. Was happy about that.
I got everything I had planned to leading up to the sale, plus a couple that were impulse buys. I'd like to cool it now until the Demy set comes out. Generally happy with the prices I paid for most of these this time.

Scroll down a bit and you'll see the Criterion Corner talks about Mulholland Drive being an upcoming release.

I picked up some of the Wes Anderson titles that I've wanted for a while.
The Darjeeling Limited
The Royal Tenenbaums
Rushmore
Half tempted to go all in and just get the other three too, but don't really want to spend $120 total on six Blu-rays. I'll probably just wait until the next sale.

Dunno why I bother wasting laser toner on those coupons - its always the same thing - the girl/guy at the register will summon the manager who will try a new excuse each time to deny them. Today I was told those coupons were fake. Sigh.
Got
Red River
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Man, that is some big packaging on those two movies. Takes up more space than required

I struck out back in November with the same issue. The manager claimed they were "fake" as well. Not sure how you can fake a barcode, but whatever.

Particularly not one that WORKS. That would be ridiculously impressive: hand creating a barcode that scans into their system and gives a discount..!
