I'm close to buying a new 5.1 receiver and I was wondering if any speakers have to be connected to an amp first. In other words, can I directly connect all my speakers to the receiver, or do any have to go through an amp?

Also, do preouts have to pass through an amp first, or can they connect directly to the speaker?

Thanks

A receiver, by definition, has a built-in amplifier (or amplifiers). So you can connect a receiver directly to speakers without using an external amp.

Preouts, on the other hand, need to be run to an amplifier, and can't be connected directly to speakers.
