technical question: is it possible both legally and technologically. i would like to make some soundtracks of various movies for my own use. shouldn't it be possible to just hook up a cd burner to the outputs on the dvd player. furthermore, shouldn't this be legal since it is for a personal copy of the music from a dvd that i own.

"Outputs" isn't specific enough. As far as I know (I have a MD recorder, not a CD burner), you can't connect your DVD and the burner via the digital connection, but you can make the analog connection. (When I try to use the digital connection, the MD player says something like "copy protected: unable to record.")

Insofar as the legalities are concerned, I express no opinion.

Legally, probably not. Technically, what I do is throw a DVD into my DVD-ROM drive. Make sure I have plenty of hard drive space. Then, fire up Sound Forge (or any decent wav recorder) and record. Afterwards, break up the sound file(s) into smaller pieces to divide up tracks to record to CD-r.

You can burn DVD audio to a home component CD burner, but it has to be with the analog outs. With most movies, when you try to record the digital audio feed, the CD burner will trip the SCMS copy protection. I have ,however, found some music concerts and foreign music DVDs that can be freely copied digitally.
