I have a 5.1 surround speaker setup that is about 4 years old. I've noticed in the past week or so, the front left & front right both will cut out, seemingly with low volume. Usually, if I turn the volume up, they will "pop" back on.

Any ideas what is causing this? Is it as simple as a loose wire connection? It seems odd that it is both front speakers at once.

First, is this a Dolby Digital setup or a Pro-Logic setup?

Second, your title is confusing. Are all speakers dropping out or just R/L (C & S are fine)?

This is a full 5.1 channel surround system (Dolby Digital). The only channels that have a problem are Front Left & Front Right. Center & both rears are fine.

This problem occurs not just with DVDs, but with any audio component (CD & radio).

Sounds to me like a simple connection problem. I'm sure you already have, but it would be a good idea to re-check your speaker connections -- both into the receiver and into the speakers.

It seems to me that 4 years isn't THAT long of a time, so I doubt the speakers' lives have drained out yet.

Good luck.

Since both the left & right experience the same problem, and both come back on at the same time, I'm beginning to wonder if the problem is with the receiver. If it was isolated to one speaker, then my guess would be wiring. So now it's starting to sound like the problem is a bit more complicated. I have a Denon, and I thought it would last a lot longer than 4 years. Any way I can test it to know for sure?

Maybe it's a blessing in disguise. Now I can get a DTS receiver! They didn't even exist back when I got this one.

switch the connections for front and rear, and see if the fronts drop out or if it's still the rears. If the fronts drop out, consider the receiver as the source of the problem. If the rears still drop out, consider the rears or cables to the rears as the source to the problem.
