Hi, I'm a huge Akira Kurasowa and Toshiro Mifune fan and was wondering what High and Low was about and if it's any good. I saw it and it intrigued me because I've never seen a Toshiro Mifune film where he isn't a samurai. Thanks.

Very cool film, I was lucky enough to catch it at an art house theater and it was a blast. The first half is a subtley brilliant morality drama and the second half is a taught cops and robber film. Nicely balanced, Mifune is really only inthe first half, but it is a great movie never the less

Great film, but the DVD has marginal picture quality (not terrible, but certainly not great) and no extras. Plus a $40 price tag.
I own it and I can definitely recommend it, but you should definitely look for a deal before buying...

I agree with everything said here. I got a good deal on it about a year ago (oh, those heady days of yore) but I definitely reccomend. Maybe rent it just to see it and then hunt for a bargain in no hurry. If you like Kurosawa and Mifune you'll really like High and Low. It's very different from what your used to.

I don't get it... why does Criterion give this one an MSRP of $40 when it has no extras? Every other one I've seen at that price has some extras.
I liked High and Low, but not as much as the other Kurosawa films I've seen. I didn't buy the complicity and sympathy of the newspapermen.
