I was wondering about the rating. I know it is rated R, but is it due to the violence or is there a lot of fowl language?

In the Patriot (w/ Mel Gibson) I think the rating was due to the violence, but that is a given when the plot is about the American Revolution.

I would say more violence/gore than language. Not for the kiddies

um... and it's not a given w/a title of Gladiator? just kidding, yeah, the violence is up there w/the Braveheart battle scenes, great story line too.

Of course it's a given there will be violence with a title like that, but I would let my child watch a "violent" program if:

1. It has a historical plot
2. It has little or no foul language

That's why I posted a question about the R rating.

I'm genuinely curious. Why does foul language offend you so much more than violence? TV censors seem to agree with your priorities - explosions, shootouts, killing, torture, etc. are all fine, as long as you don't say "the S word" - but I've never been able to understand this.

Yeah, it was rated R for very poorly filmed violence. The fight scenes are very poorly shot and don't elicit any form of excitement (and with a title like GLADIATOR you expect excitement). Also, the story line was boring and predictable, not to mention OVERLONG. However Russell Crowe does give yet another excellent performance.

I generally don't let my child watch R rated movies whether it is violent, has foul language, or nudity. However, if the movie has historical value, then I would consider letting him watch it.

When you use foul language or listen to it daily, then it becomes a habit that the children will pick up. My child knows that there is violence in this world (he also knows there are words you just don't say, because they aren't polite). I'm not going to shun him from it, just because the censors have deemed it so.

It is my decision as to what my child watches on TV or plays on the computer. It is not up to the media to decide.

My son is learning about the Ancient Greeks at the moment. Is he just to learn that there were great philosophers or that there were great battles that determined who owned what, etc...?

It is obvious to me after reading the reviews of this movie, that it is not something I would want my child to view. I don't feel that there is enough historical value to the movie.

I also believe that it is the parents responsibility to bring up their child to become a good-standing citizen. I don't think if a child turns out bad it is due to TV or video games.

Any other questions?

Of course a lot of people saw it!!it's mainstream so it plays at every multiplex until the DVD comes out!!At least that the case with my movies here!!

I don't know how historically accurate Gladiator is, though it does take place in Ancient Rome.

Some people failed to mention (i didn't see it) the hint of incest in the movie. (The brother making advances at his sister).

Oh yeah, that makes it accurate. All of the characters and events were fictitious, by the way. At least Spartacus has some factual basis (if exaggerated in the film.)

Connie Nielson is one FINE lady. those who have watched Devil's Advocate knows what I am talkin about.

since they are technically not related i think joaquin phenix was probably making those advances without the help of the movie

I didn't say it was. My comment was questioning the original posters comment about it being historically accurate.

Lyndylu, while Gladiator does have historical content and very very few swear words in it (only two of them that I remember, both s-words.....isn't it amazing how a film can still be great without all the language?), it is also extremely violent and not something you would watch for a history lesson (that side of it is interesting, but not exceedingly informative). You shouldn't let your young child watch it.
