I saw this in theters. It is really stupid. There are some good sequences but I couldn't help shake the feeling that I was watching a dumb movie and then the ending cemented it for me. Polanski continues hie decades long downward slide.

I have to disagree with Buskerdog here. This movie is one of the best I've seen this year. Johnny Depp gives a great performance, and the cinematography looks wonderful. This isn't one of Polanski's major films, but considering what else is out now, it's pretty damn good. Be warned, if you are expecting a horror movie like Scream or Urban Legend, forget it. This movie relies on a totally different pacing. Far better than most other horror movies that have come out recently. If you're unsure, rent it. One viewing may satisfy you, or convince you to buy it.

I have to second Suprmallet. I thought the movie was great. The film was visually pleasing, great acting, and it held my interest continuously throughout the film. It's on my pre-order list.

While I didn't like it as much as the 3 people above me, I did enjoy it. But be warned, its not for everyone. I would suggest renting it first.

Bad movie. The opening scene is good, however after that the movie begins its long slow decline into mediocrity. I would suggesting avoiding it at all costs.

this movie was very disappointing. I was hoping for the Polanski of old, but this movie dragged on forever. I admit it was interesting to see Depp as a semi-investigator and how he goes about seraching for clues, but the overall script and style was not developed enough to create a good movie. Wanted to like it, but in the end (especially the Scooby-Doo type ending) it sucked.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. The acting was great, cinematography, direction and set design was engrossing. Overall, visually and musically, this movie was extremely appealing. However, it is certainly more mystery than horror, and the primary themes are more an exploration of human nature, greed and obsession than an exploration of the supernatural. I still don't understand the role of the mystery girl, nor do I entirely understand what happened at the end, although I suspect I understand generally.

I hated Scream, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th and the like. I prefer a movie that has a more creepy feel to it and leaves you asking questions.

The movie's not for everyone. The feel is quite European, both in pacing and in the storyline. But, for those who enjoy that kind of thing, it's a very good movie.

This movie is one of the LONGEST ANTICLIMATIC movies that I've ever had the displeasure of enduring.

Slight spoilers****

If an actor walks up some stairs you see them from the first stair to the last. If they walk down a street you see them walk down the whole freaking street. AHHH!! Haven't they ever heard of editing?? Then you have this movie that you've endured just to see an awesome ending of the Ninth Gate and you get NOTHING!! I was so mad that I wanted to throw my tv across the room for working the whole time the movie was on. Lastly, you have the women/demon/whatever that can float and do karate but it NEVER explains what her role is in the movie!! If you like to watch every second of every move of the actors and you like to watch a person looking at books then you will like this ok. Well, as long as you don't expect an ending.
