Good DVD with a cool menu. There are many extras. The transfer is not great but not terrible. It is only in Dolby 2.0. I would say it is in the bottom 1/3 of the Criterion Collection. There are plenty better and a several worse made by Criterion. It is still essential to own. Hope this helps.

I agree. Transfer ain't the best, but it's about the best you can get. Worthwhile for the extras and movie alone. The extras looked like they've been sitting in a shoebox for decades, and the audio sucks, but you can still understand what they're saying. And there's a good handful of these extra deleted scenes. I'd recommend it only if you're a big fan of the movie (like me!). Otherwise, the average passerby should skip this.

Do you hear that sound.....Mr. Anderson?
That's the sound of inevitability.
It is the sound of your death.

As a true, life-long Python fan, I must be the dissenting opinion here. The DVD is as good as you'll ever get out of a Python DVD. The two extra commentaries by the five remaining Pythons are wonderful (especially Cleese and Palin's). The other extras are nice. The sound is as good as the source material will allow and the image is MILES better than Holy Grail. It's a totally worthwhile purchase, IMHO.

I wouldn't consider myself a rabid Python fan, but I've always liked Brian nearly as much as Grail. The Criterion is the one to get, no question about it. As previously stated, it looks amazing for a film of its vintage and budget, and unlike most movies' extra deleted scenes, which usually feel like outtakes, these are are fully-developed long finished scenes which are so good and funny that you go "I wish those had been left in" The commentary tracks are good and informative because the Pythons are smarter than the average director/actor.
