I'm interested in picking up a few of the early Hitchcock titles on Laserlight: anyone got these? Comment on the video quality? For $5 a disk, my expectations are rather low, but I'm concerned about the transfers being unwatchable.

I know the Madacy Hitchcock titles stink, but I've heard conflicting comments about the Laserlight transfers. Any help would be appreciated.

If your expectations are low, you'll be pleasantly surprised. They are definitely not unwatchable and, in fact, are surprisingly good for public domain prints. (You may want to skip past the Tony Curtis intros, though.)

I am quite happy with them. I watched Rich and Strange recently and the transfer was VERY good. Others, like The Skin Game, the transfer is so-so, but still good enough to watch.

In all, these DVDs will not make you forget about Criterion re-masters. But for the price they are a good buy with good qaulity. A couple of the DVDs include Alfred Hitchcock Presents Episodes, and all of them have trailers for other Hitch movies.


I agree with bboisvert, do yourself a big favor and skip the Tony Curtis intros .. they are pretty bad.

I agree with what has been said. For public domain prints of the master's early works, these are remarkably watchable.

When The Lady Vanishes first came out, I was torn between saving a few (ok, several bucks with the Laserlight version, or getting the full-blown treatment with the Criterion edition. Because I wanted to get several of the early Hitchcock discs, I opted for the Laserlight, and I was pleasantly surprised.

I think I may still get the Criterion edition before it becomes too hard to find, but the copy I have now is not bad, not bad at all (Tony Curtis notwithstanding).
