We've had a spot open up on our DVD Talk DVD Review Panel and are now accepting 'applications'

Here are the details:

To see the kind of reviews which we are looking for check out the DVD Talk Review Database

For the most part reviews give equal coverage to the movie and the DVD specs including quality of sound, extras, commentary etc. Each reviewer has their own style and we look to keep a diverse group of reviewers on our panel so we can have a good cross section of likes and dislikes.

The position does not pay but we do send out DVD's to be reviewed. When you first start you are required to write 4 reviews from titles in your personal collection and from there you write reviews for DVD's that get assigned to you.

Once you've been with us for a while and are a consistant and prolific contributor you no longer get assignments but rather get to select from the entire list of titles we have to send out. The downside of course is that you can get dropped from the panel if you aren't able to review the DVD's you are sent.

I'm afraid my reviews won't meet strict standards since they would tend to be simply: Sucked, OK, Great. I've never been one for being able to describe actor chemistry, character dimensionality, pacing, scenery, sound track, plot devices, etc.

Remember also that most of the time the DVD Talk review staff is focused on reviewing the quality of the DVD itself (transfer, sound etc.) first and the quality of the film second. For the most part they let you draw your own conclusions on the film itself and give you information you need to make a buying decission (how's it look, what extras are there...)

Hey Kleinmann,

Reviews are old hat and a dime a dozen. Give a monkey a typewriter ... aww nevermind...

My suggestion (that'll never be read) is to allow some film analysis instead. I'd be willing to bet there are a few people that might enjoy this sort of thing. Spread some insight on what makes a movie great. Explain the intricacies of Pulp Fiction, EWS etc...

As Blip has commented to me; "If he actually spent the time to expound on his opinions, those simpletons on this forum whose heads didn't explode from trying to wrap their minds around his insights would probably kill themselves after realizing how stupid and worthless they really are. It would be like staring into the face of God."

Also, I thought there was a bit of humor in the motherly cruelness of my line: "They try their best and I don't see you doing any better."

On another note, I really would like to see Geoff hire a monkey to write reviews. I think there has been a human bias on this forum for too long and it is time for such intolerance to end.

When reading a dvd review I am inerested in'the quality of the transfer. How is the
color, sharpness, sound, are there any
artifacs. Most pictures we have already
seen anyway. Does anyone really care what
these guys thing
about the content, chemistry of actors, etc.
It is a matter of opinion. Personally, I am
not looking for intellectual stimulation
when watching videos. Mindless entertainment
in most cases. I'm not saying people should
not give opinions. But who are we to criticize anothers view.

I might be interested, Geoff. Can you tell me about what amount of time committment is taken doing a single review?

For example, should we watch the movie, and ALL the extras? Should we watch the movie for each commentary track? About how long does it normally take to write a review? How often do you prefer to have your reviewers write their reviews? I'm finishing up my MBA right now, so my time is limited, and your answers will help me fill in some blanks.
