I have seen a VHS version of the film (shorter than the DVD version) in a film class I had last semester. I liked the film and then purchased the Criterion DVD. Regretably, the DVD is still shrinkwrapped. It is something like 3 hours to watch ... and I just don't have the time right now. But I hear the subtitles are better (more readable), and some scenes have been added. Plus I think the imaged has been restored (maybe).
The movie itself is very interresting.
Sorry I haven't checked out the DVD yet ... maybe someone else has here ???
But, sight unseen, I recommend buying any Criterion DVD. I love the collection and haven't been disappointed yet.

I have the DVD and it is one of my favorite Criterions. Great transfer, enlightening commentary by a Harvard professor (who actually explains film technique), and, as LightTrinity mentioned, is the original, uncut version of the film (it is obvious on the jester's early scene where one of the edits is).

I guess my question to you is, are you open-minded to all forms of cinema? I'm not trying to be an elitist, it's just that Andrei Rublev is a deliberate paced, epic film, replete with symbolism, that does take some getting used to. It is one of Tarkovsky's more accessible films (along with Solaris), and I consider it to be one of his best films (along with Stalker). If you are already a fan of his work, then by all means, pick this one up (along with the pre-orders of Mirror and The Sacrifice).

Get it. RUBLEV is simply one of the greatest films ever made. You can watch it 100 times and never fully get to the depths of its meaning, and its poetry. The Criterion DVD is excellent, the definitive version of the film is there (205 minutes), the only two complaints for me are minor: non-anamorphic, and the film professor's commentary is a bit much--only in the sense that I percieve him as somewhat elitist. But it doesn't detract from this masterpiece.
