I have finally gotten all my audio/video equipment into one armoire. Looks great but my wife and I can't stand all that speaker wire wrapping around the room.

What are the alternatives? Has anyone had luck with a wireless speaker system?

With the 900Mhz wireless speakers, you lose a lot of sound. The bass is almost totally absent, and the clarity is lost no matter what receiver you might run. I had one hooked up to my HT because of the same problem that you are having and ended up going back to the speaker wire running along my walls. As for the wireless speakers, they went outside for music during barbecues and parties. Otherwise, they are not in use at all.

If you have an attic or space above your room you could run wires in the inside of the wall, across the attic and down the inside of the walls near the speakers rather easily. You could put some binding post connectors behind the armoire and each speaker so the wires would run right from the amp to the wall behind the armoire and out of the wall right to the speakers. You wouldn't even notice the speaker wire then.

Other than that maybe some flat paintable wire may help hide it better.

Does anyone have anything good to say about wireless? I also want to avoid the whole wire issue, and I seem to remember a system that used the house wiring to carry the speaker signal (you'd plug in the transmitter into one plug and you could put the speakers into any other plug in the house).

I was motivated by a Do-it-Yourselfer to cut a bunch of holes into my drywall and ceilings. At first it was just a good excuse to buy some cool power tools and tear stuff up, but the whole setup looks sweet without wires everywhere. Go to one of the major home improvement stores and either sign up for one of the short classes on drywall repair or get a brochure with instructions. You'll save a lot of money on something that most people can do themselves. I had about 5 holes to patch and a pro quoted me almost $200, so I did some homework and it cost me less than $50.

Head over to smarthome.com and request a catalog... they've got all sorts of stuff for both wired and wireless, including those binding post outlets and the paint-over wires (don't think those would be that great for high end audio, though.) Some really neat home theatre stuff there.

I'm using some 2.4Ghz transmitters to send music from my MP3 server down in the basement up to my main stereo system. Works pretty well, although the bass could be a bit better. Definitely better than the 900Mhz stuff.
