Is DTS bad for your speakers?

I dont have really good speakers, and I remember reading somewhere that DTS could blow out your speakers? Is this true?

As long as you use your receiver's bass management (set your speakers to "small" if they're small), and don't push your receiver into sending a clipped signal, you'll be fine.

DTS dvds are no more dynamic than cds (at least in theory).

DTS is mastered louder than Dolby Digital! So if you think DTS will blow you speakers, then you should adjust your master volume down before play the DTS encoded material.

There is nothing inherent to the DTS standard that would cause a DTS movie to be louder than a DD movie. It's possible that a movie that has separate DD and DTS releases could be louder in its DTS format. It's also possible that they could be roughly the same level. And of course, it's also possible that the DD disc could be louder.

As long as you're not sending your amplifier (or the amplifier section of your receiver) into clipping, and your receiver and speakers aren't horribly mismatched power-wise, you will be fine.

In my Sony DVD manual, it states that if you do not have a DTS receiver, DO NOT turn DTS on as an audio type. It COULD emit a sound that will damage your hearing and your speakers.

Not sure if this is what you are talking about...

That could very well be what he's talking about, but since deadman31 mentioned that he doesn't have very good speakers, I assumed he was worried about their ability to handle DTS compared to better speakers.

Any speaker can be damaged if you try to play a DTS signal through a non-DTS receiver.

This is only an issue for laserdiscs. DTS laserdiscs will play the auible digital bitstream as an incredibly loud noise if you don't have a DTS decoder. DVDs don't have this problem. They simply play silence.

I do have a DD/DTS receiver, and I have watched movies in DTS(Gladiator for one). I suppose that as long as I dont turn the volume all the way up my speakers will be fine. Also, if you dont have a dts receiver, and set the DVD player to DTS all you get is silence. I did it when I had my pro logic receiver.
