Is there a way to make Tivo work without paying the service? I plan on buying the Sony DTV/Tivo combo. If not I will purchase a Replay. Any help would be great.
Thanks

Without the service, you can only use it as a manual recording device. In other words you have to program the start time, end time and the channel for everything you want to tape. You can't use the onscreen guide, record stuff just by clicking on the program in the guide, or searching for it in the "Pick Programs to Record Menu," you can't set season passes to tape your favorite shows everyweek automatically, and I'm pretty sure you can't even pause and rewind live tv. In otherwords it is worth the 9.95/month 99.99/year or 199/life of the machine service fees.

My only problem with Tivo is how long will they be around. Thats why the $199.00 life time fee really makes me scard.

I pay the monthly, because I figure they are bound to come out with something more advanced in the 20 months it would take to reach the lifetime price. If not, oh well, I took a chance.

I, like Goblincat, just pay the monthly fee. That way if they quit before 20 months you're not out anything. That said, I mainly do it because the lifetime is only for the life time of the machine, I only have a 14 hour and will likely want to upgrade to a newer model with more storage sometime in the future. Also I think Tivo is here to stay. There popularity is growing, and they already kicked the sh!t out of replay.

Have you guys checked out the TIVO forum?

joshhinkle:
have you seen the Tivo hack to add more hours? You can get your 14 hour up to ~100 hours.

Do you wish you would have gone with the lifetime now?

My gamble didn't pay off. Here it is about 3.5 years later and I still have the original TiVo. I have now paid around $500 in monthly fees. I guess I should have gone with the $200 lifetime.

What a strange bump. What's really odd is seeing all these pro-Tivo statements from Josh Hinkle, when more recent threads show him against it?

I just realized I've had my TiVo for 4 years on the lifetime subscription. Seeing commercials for the 2004 Olympics reminded me that some of the first recordings I made were for the 2000 Olympics. My TiVo has certainly paid for itself, glad I went lifetime. And now 4 years later I've discovered something new, I'm able to make backups to DVD with some of the new tools that have been released.

I've had TiVo for more than four years. When I got my first one, a 30 hour model, I immediately got the lifetime subscription ($200 at the time). Last year I took advantage of a promotion they were running and got an 80 hour model and transferred the subscription to it (the transfer was part of the promotion). I've since used my old one as a manual recorder.

The lifetime subscription has been a great deal!
