I was comparing these two receivers at cnet.com and it said that the 6500 had 5 channels and the 7000 had 5.1. I was a little confused at this. Is this a mistake? Is the 6500 not true dolby digital?

THanks

The 6500 is 5.1. I have it and I really like it. It was a great deal for $200 at Mercata.

Customer service at crutchfield said that the 6500 wouldn't power a passive subwoofer. I was thinking about getting the cambridge soundworks ensemble IV to go with the 6500, but I guess it won't work with the passive subwoofer. Are there any receivers that will?

If the sub has an internal crossover, just run the speaker level output of the receiver into the sub....then from the sub into your mains. That will let you use the passive sub without sending the bass frequencies to the small mid / high frequency speakers.

what kind of speaker setup do you have with the 6500?

Ezra,

I have a pair of older Pioneer CS-R580 main speakers. For my surrounds I have the Sony CR490 center and surround set. I have an old sub from my prologic system that is a powered Magnavox 50W.

I've kind of pieced it together in the last couple of months. I think that it sounds really good, but I'm in a small dorm room right now. Hope that helps.

I was trying to decide between the 6500 and 7000, I ended up going with the 6500 because I got it for $80 cheaper than the 7000.

I would like to pair the 6500 with the ensemble IV from cambridge soundworks and add their 8" powered subwoofer somewhere down the line.

I would think that it would work pretty well. Reading some of the reviews of the speakers, they sound like they put out some good sound.

I think it said that the speakers are 75W max, but that should be fine as long as you don't crank it. I had old 45W center and surrounds hooked up to my receiver for a couple of weeks before I bought the sonys and they sounded great.

I'm not an expert on speakers and watts though.
