I have a Toshiba 36" HDTV and wondering what VCR would take advantage of HDTV set if there any? Or at least what would be the best pick?

Currently there are none. Tivo and Replay only record at 400-500 lines of res.

you either need to buy used,or wait. pioneer is comming out with dvr-2000. records to dvd, buts its msrp is $2399. Phillips also has a similar product.

Its just a matter of time. But I am sure the movie industry is going to fight them.

The best you can do in the VCR department right now is S-video. Some of the upper end JVC models are rated well.

Consider S-VHS. It has a higher resolution than stanard VHS and will let you take advantage of the better picture with HDTV. Try http://www.crutchfield.com to get info and some sound (but undiscounted) prices.
