I'm trying to figure out what to get myself.
I would love the ability to watch movies while travelling and am leaning towards a portable dvd player.
However, someone pointed out to me, that for a little more, I could get a laptop that has a dvd drive.
If you had to choose, what would you pick?

Well.. it wouldn't be a top of the line SOny Viao laptop. it would be one around $1300 or so.
And it seemed that it would be either a HP or a compaq.
If thats any indication.

I'd get a laptop, it's more versatile.

I'd go with a laptop. But you might want to factor in getting a few extra batteries.
A laptop can be used for storing digital photos, doing work, surfing the web, keeping a diary, tracking finances, playing games, storing maps for driving trips.
But if your main thing is going to be watching movies on the go, make sure you get extra batteries (and the appropriate adapter power cables-car, plane).
Why? 12-14 inch screens! Just make sure you try both an anamorphic and non anamorphic DVD on the screen to see what you think of the image quality. I'm not sure of today's laptops, but a couple years ago, the low end laptops didn't always do too well with full motion video.
Lastly, I think this belongs more in the DVD and HT Hardware forum, so...
Moving thread.

It all depends on whether or not you have a use for a laptop. If you only want something to watch movies on, get the portable player. If you have some extra cash, get the laptop.
I have a pillow set up on my front seat with the laptop on it. Since the laptop speakers aren't that loud, I run one of those tape adapters so I can utilize the car speakers. Also, make sure you get a DC charger, 20 or 30 bucks is worth the hassle those batteries are.

It also depends on how good a portable dvd player you were shopping for. If you wanted to get the expensive $1200 units, then I would just go for the laptop. On the other hand, if you got the $469 Audiovox portable, then taht is a big enough savings compared to a laptop that I would just go with the portable.
