Sorry if this has been gone over before or if it seems like a stupid question, but I am new to this stuff. I have a both a DVD player and a Receiver with Dolby Digital and DTS. The receiver has the 5.1 channel inputs, but the DVD player has no 5.1 outputs. Currently I have them connected with an optical cable. I was wondering does 5.1 work through the optical cable or do I need a DVD player with the 5.1 outputs. Thanks for any help in advanced.

5.1 works through the optical cable and a much better way to go. Make sure your dvd player is set to digital out.

much better through optical. However, if your dvd player does not pass the DTS bitsream you won't get DTS. There should be a DTS logo on the dvd player.
