I have my M&K 12" sub (the THX one) pointing directly into my couch.

How much of a sin is this? thought it might not be THAT bad since it's LFE stuff, but..

The reasoning is that, if I dont, the cat will scratch the hell out of it

Oh the humanity!!

This one is simple: Get rid of the cat! I'm kidding of course, "Good kitty...".

If the sub sounds good to you then I wouldn't worry about it but I definitely think it would better off in another position. Not a big deal though.

Mainly my wifes cat - but still, better not!

It does sound good, but I think maybe it gets a little "mumbled" by the short range before it hits a "couch-wall"

Can you fire it into a corner or against a wall? If so do that, then the cat can't get it and you'll get a significant gain in SPL.

Sure - wont the wall deflect directly back into the sub tho?

Or is that no concern?

If your sub has feet, you could move the feet to the woofer side and then use it as a "Down Firing" sub. Then you could put it anywhere you want.

Firing it into a wall or corner will reinforce the bass. You generally get about a 3 dB gain firing into a wall, or a 6dB gain firing it into a corner. As an added bonus your cat won't be able to damage it. One thing you could try is every time your cat is by the sub crank up some bass heavy tunes and I'm sure eventually your cat will be afraid of the sub. Just don't tell PETA about it.
