After months of waffling finally got my 55" Mitsubishi Diamond series 16:9. I was actually intending on buying a 65" but ran out of room in my familyroom (damn furniture) and only had about 8.5' eyeball to screen. Even the salesman steered me away from the 65". No problem though. It seems like every DVD I have is brand new again. As soon as I get my entertainment center I'll post some pictures.

Yeah...go ahead and rub it in....I will just have to be happy with my 53in 4:3 Sony until I can justify the expense to my wife!!! My ultimate plan in about one year maybe two is to move the Sony into the master bedroom and purchase a nice HDTV 16X9 television for the Home Theater!!! http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I bet it is awesome!!! http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif

What about a direct view HDTV? I'm thinking about getting one of the 34" to 38" direct views. I have a room that's only 11' square, so it'd be perfect. I'll have to buy new entertainment center furniture, but I know what I'd need.
My room is 13.5 x 19 so it is a pretty good size, but lengthwise at one end is the fireplace, the other is open to the kitchen, so I had to go by the width. Subtract 2+' for the TV and about the same for the couch and I had less than 9' to the screen. The other drawback is opposite the TV is the window, so I have some lighting issues to deal with. I'll deal with them. As far as my wife goes, it's don't ask, don't tell. She doesn't really want to know and I don't really want to tell her how much it cost. As long as it doesn't come from her money we keep the peace.

I assume you immediately turned way down the picture and contrast and brightness, or whatever they're call on that set. Now go adjust the set with Avia if you haven't already done so.

I adjusted it last night with Video Essentials. And yes the brightness and contrast were at maximum. When I got done my wife said the picture looked dull now. Yah but at least it will last more than a year.

Good choice on a set. I suggest you splurge for ISF, it made a big difference on my Mits set -- particularly the HD.

What are the prices on the 16x9 tv's nowadays?
What are they doing to prevent screen burn from the Standard 4x3 picture being shown on it most of the time?
I know that Dish network has adressed this on some of their recievers by adding gray sidebars to the screen when watching in the 4x3 ratio.

I paid $3780 plus tax delivered for the 55907. It would have been another $115 if I wanted no payments for a year. The TV has 5 different modes including the gray bars. I much prefer "stretched". The middle of the screen is normal and the edges are stretched out to fill the screen. The only problem occurs during rapid panning, you can see the slight distortion. Still a better option than the gray bars. They bother me far more than the black bars from my 4:3 ever did.

the big screen store (http://www.thebigscreenstore.com/) in the DC area has Mits 16x9 HDTV for $2499, $2999, and $3999 for the 46", 55", and 65", respectively. With 1-year no interest no payments. Don't know if they're as good as your model, Jim, but those prices are pretty damn good for any WS HDTV.

The Mits utilize grey bars for 4x3 display.
I've seen no burn in on mine yet but I've
only had it for a year.

Jim,
Congrats on the new toy! I just got mine in early November for my birthday. (Pioneer Elite PRO-510HD) I know what you mean about how every DVD you rewatch is like seeing it for the first time. I'm still stunned at how film-like the picture is. After I got mine I upgraded my DVD player to a Sony progressive scan. It DOES make a difference. Like you, I prefer to watch my 4:3 material in the "NaturalWide" mode which sounds just like what you described on the Mitsubishi. If you haven't done it yet, calibrate all the settings with AVIA or VE and do the multi-point convergence. If the picture looks too dim and soft, your eyes will get used to it eventually. Also use dim indirect back-lighting behind the set. It will relieve eyestrain and make the picture look better.

Stats - Mitsubishi has the silver, gold, platinum, platinum plus and diamond series. Why? I don't know. But I do think they offer a tremendous value for the dollar. I set mine up with VE but I'll get ISF after a few months.

You get a few additional fancy features with each upgrade. I think the silver is not HD, and the gold is a 4:3 HD. I don't think either are available anymore as I've read that Mitsubishi is committed to only HD 16:9.
As far as the other 3, I think the differences are fairly minimal. The diamond has a super shiny cabinet!

ISF is a professional calibration by a technician. I honestly don't know, I would like it but that wasn't a factor in my decision. I just wanted the 16:9 screen and better picture for DVD viewing.

After running your set for over 100 hours you should get an ISF calibration. I have heard that it make a big difference with your brand which does not come out of the box very well adjusted. Picture temperature in particular needs adjustment.

The silver and the gold are both non-hdtv units. Both 4:3. I purchased a 50" gold about a year ago and had the technician come out and adjust it with the convergance system. I adjusted the contrast and picture and color temp. to my liking and it did make quite a difference. I have had a couple of friends, not H/T enthusiasts like myself and most all of you who post here say it was the nicest looking big screen they had ever seen which translates to me as the picture is very good. The factory does not set these units anywhere near perfect. I can vouch for that.
