Hey guys,

I'm a newbie. Whats the best home theater package for under 800 bucks? I'm looking for one w/ surround sound and a receiver.

Thanks a lot...please help a newbie out! http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif

I'm also a newbie to home theatre, and I recently purchased the Kenwood HTB-503 HT in-a-box and I'm very happy with it. With new cables, it cost me about $750CND.

I second the Kenwood HTB-503... Great system for the price...

I big fan of the Onkyo HT-484 http://www.800.com/prod.asp?p=3952
Unlike the kenwood it comes with two way speakers for all channels, and while the reciever doesn't have as many inputs as the Kenwood, it's of higher quality IMHO and has a lower THD. To me, this system sounds excellent as a music system too, while the Kenwood HTB-503 my friend has that I auditioned sounded horrible for music. Good luck with whatever you get!

Here's a link to the HTF for a surround system for cheap...FYI, it's a JVC system.

for 800 bones, you don't have to go with a "package". if i were in that market, i would take a look at a pioneer vsx-d509 receiver ($200-250 online) or vsx-d409 for about $50 less and a buy good set of canadian speakers. you could get the take 5 set with sub for $600ish or you could pick up a set of 4 energy e:XL-16s and an e:XL center for about $630. i would do the latter and get a sub later.

e-mail marc at audioshop.ca for energys, paradigms, etc. he's great to deal with.

I agree with Chess. While you may like the reciever in a kit, you might not like the speakers, or vic versa. Look for deals, and audition reciever/speaker combos. Even audition your favorites at home if your HT shop has a good return policy (and you have the time). It would settle to drop 800 bucks on something your settling for because it was sold together.

Incidentally, many home theater stores will sell "packages" that they have come up with, and they will allow you to substitute whatever reciever/DVD/speaker package that you want in the same price range. Listen and try...then buy. You'll probably be happier with a system you put together rather than one a manufacturer puts together.

Also, if it makes you feel any better, you've already made the most important decision...to spend that $800 on a foray into home theater; it'll be worth it. =)

Good luck in your decisions, and happy viewing.

Bill~
