Ok here's the setup. My HT is in a bedroom roughly 10 x 12 x 8 or so. All my speakers are Cerwin-Vegas, with my floorstanding speakers having 12" subs. I have a Pioneer VSX-D409 receiver. I'm looking for the best powered subwoofer that $300-400 can buy that will also do for a room about the size of the average family room.

You guys are the experts, let me know what you can come up with.

I would HIGHLY recommend the SVS 25-31CS subwoofer. You can get either the CS (passive) which can easliy be driven by an extra channel of a receiver or a mono block amp.Or you could get the powered version but you would have to wait about 2 months for delivery. They build per order.Go to the Hometheater Forum and read the reviews on them and you will see that they are the best kept secret in subwoofers.Go to this link and check them out www.svsubwoofers.com

While I totally agree that SVS subs are among the best available, I would also suggest going for something with some more 'ooomph' in the low end then the 25-1CS. 25Hz isn't all that low for a sub, regardless of the quality of the unit.
Are your Cerwin Vegas powered towers, or did you mean they had 12" woofers?
Depending on the frequency response of your mains, you'll need a sub capable of handling low,low frequencies, below 25Hz.

The other SVS models are the 20-39 and the 16-46. The 1st number is the tuning frequency of the enclosure, and the 2nd number is the height of the enclosure. They come highly recommended.

Have you considered the Sony subwoofer at Best Buy for around $200. I think its part number is something like WMA40 and it comes with only 120W of power. But I've seen people praising this little sub as well on the HTF. I doubt that it goes real low, but maybe it'll still give enough kick when watching DVDs. If you didn't like it, just return it. Just a thought.

For $300.00 to $400.00,I REALLY doubt you find any subwoofer that will go lower and perform better than the 25-31.I own a apair of SVS subs and I know first hand what they are capable of.I used to own the Mirage BPS-400 which is an outstanding sub,but is not in the same league as the SVS.I also own the Legacy Classic`s which will destroy the Cerwin-Vegas in the bass department and the SVS subs take the bass to another level.

DVD_O_Rama: Yeah I meant woofers, not subwoofers. DUh. I shouldn't be allowed to post in forums after midnight, I swear!

Please also explain to me how I would run a passive sub using an "extra channel" on my receiver. Thanks!

In May 2000, Tom Nousaine of Sound and Vision recommended two US$500 subs: Hsu VTF-2 (US$475-$550 online) and Mission 700AS (US$300-$350).

The Mission 700ASi now replaces the discontinued 700AS with an upgraded amp (150W instead of 100W). Both have a 10 inch woof.

Nousaine measured the 700AS (10% distortion, 2 metres in a 7500cu.ft. room, corner loaded) as follows:

LFE: 102 dB at 25 Hz
Average SPL: 108.1 db between 25-62 Hz

IMO, those are pretty awesome figures for a 10 inch woof and a 100 W amp. In smaller rooms, Nousaine estimates a few more dB's and a bit lower extension.

His review is at http://www.soundandvisionmag.com under "Bargain Bassment".

IMO, a $300-$400 budget will only allow good performance to about 25Hz. A budget in the $1K and up is required for the same performance to 20 Hz or lower. SVS subs also offer excellent bang for the buck. http://www.svsubwoofers.com

BTW, I have a pair of Mission 700AS in a 10'x20'x8' apartment living room.

For your price range, you might also want to check out the Klipsch KSW-12, which is a down-firing 12" powered sub with 440 watts max.

you simply CANNOT get an SVS powered sub for $400, so put that idea to bed. you can get the mission sub for that and for a bit more get the HSU sub. if you are stuck on price then the mission is the best bet.
