2017 LIST THREAD
This thread is for LISTS ONLY. Discussion of films, questions about the challenge, etc., should be directed to the Discussion Thread. You are; however, encouraged to provide reviews and comments within your list.
Many people put their checklists in spoiler tags, to allow easier browsing of the list thread by others.
Also, if you are planning to reveal key plots points/endings in your mini reviews, you should put them in spoiler tags. To apply spoiler tags, you can click the spoiler button on the toolbar or use the text below:
[ spoiler] Remove the spaces to really hide something, like this
Spoiler:
The challenge officially begins August 31 at dusk in whatever location you are in at the time, and ends on October 1st at dawn in whatever location you are in at that time. Also, feel free to time your final Criterion film(s) to coincide with the start of the Horror Challenge.
FilmStruck
Since our last challenge, The Criterion Collection's streaming library has been moved to FilmStruck. This is an add-on channel not included in the base FilmStruck subscription. It includes titles that have yet to be issued on physical disc from Criterion; any such film included in this channel is eligible for this challenge (but not anything else on FilmStruck outside the Criterion Channel).
Optional Checklist
The checklist is completely optional. It is just a "fun" inclusion to give one a sense of accomplishment, to help one diversify viewing, or to use as a guide on what to watch next.
Each film can count for multiple sections, but only one check mark per section. Example: Pierrot le fou could count for the 1960's in Decades and Jean-Luc Godard in People, but it could not count for Godard and Anna Karina in People. You would need a separate film for Karina.

1. The Exterminating Angel (El Ángel Exterminador) (Luis Buñuel, 1962 / Mexico / DVD) --- Spine #459
A group of wealthy friends find themselves mysteriously unable to leave a drawing room after a dinner party. They soon descend into madness as their civility cracks. I'm a fan of media that explores what happens when our basic infrastructure fails or is inaccessible, and this film is both delightful and horrifying when it answers that question.
--- Essay: "Exterminating Civilization" / Marsha Kinder
September 4th
2. Broadway (Pál Fejös, 1929 / United States)* --- supplemental film on Lonesome
Pál Fejös's show business epic is the anti-Busby Berkeley musical, more interested in the drama behind the curtain of the musical numbers. It's a pretty standard plot about a showgirl torn between two men: a poor performer and a wealthy producer/bootlegger. Add a very dead mobster and a laconic detective, and you have lots of backstage antics. I wish the good guy wasn't such a whiny sap.
--- Interview: Hal Mohr (cinematographer)
September 5th
3. Cameraperson (Kirsten Johnson, 2016 / United States / AmazonPrime)* --- Spine #853
Cinematographer and director Kirsten Johnson has created a rich tapestry of humanity with unused footage from many documentaries on which she's worked. It's a beautiful documentary at creates meaning from the juxtaposition of images and sequences. I've seen a few of the documentaries, and I want to see more.
4. Breaker Morant (Bruce Beresford, 1980 / Australia)* --- Spine #773
Three Australian soldiers are tried for war crimes in the Boer War. The film looks at how political systems as well as ordinary people are warped by wartime to do horrible things. The trio of soldiers have committed atrocities against prisoners who have mutilated and killed their comrades, and the British Empire has dirtied itself in a barbaric war. Ultimately, it explores how war destroys morality and civility.
--- Interviews: Bruce Berseford (director) ; Donald McAlpine (cinematographer) ; Bryan Brown (actor) ; Edward Woodward (actor)
--- Featurette: "The South African War" (2015)
--- Theatrical trailer
September 6th
5. Alice in the Cities (Alice in den Städten) (Wim Wenders, 1974 / Germany)* --- Spine #816
After journeying through the United States, a German journalist is jaded and melancholic. Through a series of events, he becomes the temporary caretaker of a young girl and travels with her to find her grandmother. The film explores the weird intersection of passivity and action and how despondent humans can rise to the occasion when needed. It's also a film about situations that couldn't happen in our current world.
--- Essay: "A Girl's Story" / Allison Anders
September 10th
6. Design for Living (Ernst Lubitsch, 1933 / United States) --- Spine #592
Two starving artists fall in love with the same woman, and she falls for both of them. A hilarious 30s sex farce ensues when the art starts paying off. For me, Miriam Hopkins and Edward Everett Horton steal the show - her with her sexual frustration and he with his usual befuddled stodginess.
--- Short: "The Clerk" (Ernst Lubitsch, 1932 / United States)*
--- Interview: Joseph McBride (film scholar)
--- Essay: "Notes on the Play" / Barry Day
--- Selected-scene commentary by film scholar William Paul
September 11th
7. Clouds of Sils Maria (Olivier Assayas, 2014 / France / Netflix Instant)* --- Spine #822
An aging actress deals with fissures forming in her life and conception of herself. She also has an exciting, frustrating, and intimate relationship with her young assistant. Assayas explores the intersection of the new and old, established and insecure.
--- Essay: "iClouds of Sils Maria" / Molly Haskell
September 12th
8. A Choice of Coward: Design for Living (Joan Kemp-Welch, 1964 / United Kingdom)* --- supplemental film on Design for Living
This is a Made-for-TV adaptation of Coward's play which shows that Lubitsch and company thoroughly dismantled the original to make the movie. The play has more overt homosexual overtones but still feels a stodgier than the 1933 film.
September 15th
9. Stalker (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1979 / Russia)* --- Spine #888
September 21st
10. Three Colors: Blue (Krzysztof Kieslowski, 1993 / France)

The 2017 Criterion Challenge
First Time Viewing
Television: 1
Streaming: 1
DVD: 2
Blu-ray: 1
August 31
1. The Ruling Class (1972), #132--Peter O'Toole's wildly dark and satiric performance as the insane 14th Earl of Gurney richly deserved his Academy Award nomination. The satire on aristocratic privilege in post-imperial Britain can be ham-handed at times, and the shifting of tone from black comedy to outright horror can be disconcerting, but it richly deserves its cult classic reputation.
September 1
2. Les Diaboliques (1955), #35--Brilliant crime film: the wife and mistress of an unpleasant school headmaster plot his murder, and then it gets interesting. Brilliant suspense film whose plot was recycled in Games (1967), also starring Simone Signoret alongside a very young James Caan and Katherine Ross.
September 11
3. Fantastic Planet (1973), #820--Using trippy 70s animation and rock music soundtrack, Rene Laloux creates a genuinely alien world of Draags and the Om,s humans they treat as pests.
September 12
4. Multiple Maniacs (1970), #863--John Water's early films are best described using Waters's own term, "cinematic crimes." Long before he became America's dirty grandpa, he invented the midnight movie with his low-budget flicks starring his troupe of Baltimore oddballs, with the fabulous Divine headlining each film.
September 13
5. Charulata (1964), #669--Charulata is a beautiful, sensitive film about a lonely married woman in 1870s India who strays with her husband's cousin.
September 16
6. Eating Raoul (1982), #625--At the time it was released, Eating Raoul was regarded as a darkly subversive satire on the Me Generation and the hedonism of the 70s. Coming out in the early days of the Reagan era made it even naughtier. It's still a funny comedy, but more of a period piece.
September 18
7. Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964), #821--Peter Sellers triumphs playing multiple roles in this Stanley Kubrick black comedy that must have frightened as much as amused Cold War audiences in the mid-60s.
September 19
8. Kagemusha (1980), #267--Often regarded as a dress rehearsal fro Kurosawa's more opulent masterpiece Ran, Kagemusha is a classic on its own, a tale of a thief plucked from execution to act as a lookalike for a feudal lord. There are so many great moments in this film, each encounter with someone who knew Lord Shingen that could betray the thief, the gloriously colored sets at the climax.
September 21
9. Monterey Pop (1968), #168--Back when music was real. Compared to today's over-produced, Auto-Tuned pop, the music of the 60s played live sounds raw and crude, but it exuded an energy that just can't be matched by any act today. The end of the film shows Ravi Shankar playing an extended raga and getting into a musical duel with his tabla player, all the while holding the audience rapt. When the show finally ends, the audienced stands on its feet, roaring its appreciation for Shankar's virtuoso sitar playing. Let's see Taylor Swift do that.
10. Don't Look Back (1967), #786--D.A. Pennybaker captures Dylan at the zenith of his fame during a tour of the UK in 1965, before he went electric, outraging his folkie fan base and before he was eclipsed by the hard rock acts to come. At 23 Dylan was brilliant, arrogant, pompous, and honest, and the greatest singer-songwriter of his generation.
September 22
12. Gimme Shelter (1970), #99--Much of what kids today think about the 60s is mythology peddled by people who should know better. Altamont didn't kill the 60s, heroin and Nixon did, but the catastrophic decision to hire the Hell's Angels as security does put a sad coda to the peace and love vibe of Woodstock Nation spawned only 4 months earlier.
September 22
13. I Married a Witch (1942), #676-I'm not a huge fan of romantic comedies, but this movie is adorable. Veronica Lake and Cecil Kellaway are a daughter and father pair of witches who were burned at the stake in the 17th century, but whose spirits have been freed to wreak havoc on the modern world (well, modern in the 40s). Lake falls in love with Fredric March, an aspiring politician, and hilarity ensues.
September 23
15. This is Spinal Tap (1984), #12--This movie goes to 11.
September 25
16. Scanners (1981), #712--David Cronenberg's low-budget sci-fi/horror masterpiece still works today. Patrick McGoohan as the evil scientist is brilliant as always, and Micheal Ironside delivers a solid performance as the rogue villain telepath.
September 29
17. Help (1965), #LD016--My favorite of all the Beatles films. The jokes still work 50+ years later, and the music is immortal. It's odd how common smoking was back then. In "You're Going to Lose That Girl", Ringo is puffing away on a cancer stick as he drums.
Sep. 30
18. Cat People (1942), #833 I finally opened my unwatched Val Lewton boxset to watch Cat People. One fo the finest horror films of the 1940s, Cat People relies upon atmospheric direction and acting to create a sense of unease in this tory of a woman who may be a were-panther who kills her victims when she is emotionally aroused, or who just may be neurotic.
19. Cronos (1993)-Blu-Ray. #551. Guillermo Del Toro's first film is shows the promise of a talented, young director. Cronos contains several of the themes of his later films: a child in danger, brutality vs kindness, the persistence of the past

My List
I'm starting out with some I have on DVD. Since I haven't bought DVDs for a while, I've probably had those a long time (unless they were gifts).
8/31
1. On the Waterfront (1954)
9/1
2. Badlands (1973)*
I was sure I'd watched this before, but in spite of knowing the basic plot, it was totally unfamiliar so don't think I had.
9/2
3. Two Lane Blacktop (1971)*
9/3
4. Fighting Elegy (1966)*
9/4
5. Red River (1948)
9/5
6. Ministry of Fear* (1948)
9/8
7. I Married a Witch* (1942)
9/30
8. Band of Outsiders* (1964)
