25 Best Films of the 21st Century So Far, according to The New York Times
What are your thoughts? There's a lot of foreign films here I haven't seen yet, and some odd choices like I'm Not There and The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
It's a lengthy read, also includes some insight from other prominent filmmakers.

IMO, except for a few (maybe 5), I disagree with that list.
Here are mine, INPO (tomorrow I may change my mind)

2. The Master
3. The Turin Horse
4. The White Ribbon
5. 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days
6. Dogville
7. Talk to Her
8. Dogtooth
9. Under the Skin
10. Ida
11. No Country for Old Men
12. Eastern Promises
13. A Prophet
14. Werckmeister Harmonies

I always preferred Brokeback vs Crash that year, and I'm not sure BM would even make my list.
It's definitely a list created to ensure there is a decent representation of various genres, but I don't even think those choices were very strong. The funniest film I've seen in theaters this century was Borat, not Virgin, but hey, they're a nice sampling that I really can't argue against, they're all decent to great films. Whether or not they're the "best" is irrelevant.

yeah I'm not down with that list. The 40 Year Old Virgin might not even make my Top 25 comedies of the 21st Century list. (ok it probably would but you get my point.)

SPIRITED AWAY and A TOUCH OF SIN are the only ones I agree with. Of course, any such list that doesn't include KILL BILL, VOL. 1 is immediately dismissed as bogus in my household.

It kind of looks like a list made by a movie snob who is trying to show how refined their movie taste is, but fails. Ultimately, I guess it's all subjective, but There Will Be Blood as the best movie of the century so far? Please. Boyhood? Great idea for a project, but ultimately not as good as the hype, IMO.
The only ones I could possibly agree with are Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and maybe Inside Out. Kill Bill, No Country For Old Men, The Dark Knight, any of the Lord of the Rings movies, The Departed, Donnie Darko, The Incredibles, City of God, and Oldboy are just a few I'd put on my list ahead of these.

Well the list is a great article to use as evidence for something I've been thinking about a lot lately. There just aren't any great movies anymore. And the few good ones are highly devisive. I love Tree of Life and Mulholland Dr. but an equal amount of people dislike those films.
There used to be those once in a decade films that everyone could agree on their quality. In the '40s you had Casablanca, in the 50s Singin' in the Rain, in the 60s 2001:ASO, in the seventies Jaws and Star Wars. Where's the once in a decade movie? Where is it? The answer is, we've lost our way. We don't know how to make them anymore.

Lot of stuff on the list I haven't seen, but I regard Amelie, Almost Famous, and Atonement more highly than anything on that list I have seen. And that's just the A's.
One title I'm really surprised to see is White Material. I've picked that up in B&N during the Criterion sales plenty of times, but never closed the sale.
This may have sufficiently piqued my curiosity to finally get it next month.

Well, not everyone would agree on 2001 or Star Wars. But, IMO, there are great films for each decade:
80s: Raging Bull, Back to the Future, Raiders of the Lost Ark
90s: Silence of the Lambs, Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Toy Story, Shawshank Redemption.

Yes there are great films for each decade...and then it just stops. The '00s and the '10s have got nothing. And the few great films we've had during that time are controversial, not everyone can agree on their merits.

I'm a huge Bob Dylan fan and he's my music hero. You either love the guy or you don't. There's not much middle ground and I get the criticism he gets as a musician. One such criticism is that he is "pretentious". When "I'm Not There" came out in 2007, with a tremendous cast, and Dylan's music as the soundtrack, I felt this was a perfect opportunity for people who never gave Dylan's music a chance to have an open mind.
I was absolutely wrong. "I'm Not There" was such a disservice to Dylan and only reinforced the notion that he is "pretentious" by making the most pretentious movie I have ever seen. What a disapointment! It made me want to hate Dylan.
To say that it is one of the best 25 movies of the century as of now is crazy. There are others that I don't agree with but the fact that it made the list shows how wrong it is.
This is my two cents but Todd Haynes, you suck pal.

Mulholland Drive wasn't even a movie. It was an aborted TV show with a bunch of incoherent crap added as time fluffer so it could be called a feature film. Sorry, Lynch is a performance artist whose sole purpose is to give the middle finger to everybody.

I like the movies on that list, but outside of #1 and #2 I don't think they'd be near the top of my favorites this century.
Which makes it more impressive that it works as brilliantly as it does. Still one of the only movies I've seen that successfully showed intent vs. reality, even if it does fallback on the "It was mostly a dream." plotline.

This list kind of reaffirms my opinion that they are very few classic/really great movies anymore since the turn of the century.
I don't know what happened (because there are so many great films in 90's), but my DVD/BluRay collection thinned out after 2000.
Maybe all of the great creative talent shifted to tv as we are in that golden age now. I just know that 15-20 years ago I would rent 2-3 new movies a weekend and now I binge watch tv shows instead.
