Today is the day (6-7) for National VCR Day.

While we are on the subject-will VCR's or laserdisc's ever make a comeback?

I could see VCR's coming back basically for storage (because dvd-r isn't reliable over time and VHS has proven over time too be better)

I just bought a used laserdisc player from ebay and the movies look just as good as a lot of my DVDs. Sound is often better. Maybe that's why LPs are on the comeback trail.

VHS is definitely not coming back. Analog and too low quality.

People are mostly switching to DVR and streaming for viewing stuff. So it's harddrives for temporary storage for DVR recordings and "offline" copies of stuff.

Camcorders have switched from Digital8 and MiniDV to SD cards.

There doesn't really seem to be a "professional" level videotape that's kept up with the ever evolving video resolution/codecs. I could see studios archiving digital video footage and masters onto a general data storage tape format like LTO, but that's not really a "VCR," in that you'd be offloading the video files from the tape before you'd watch them, and wouldn't be recording to the tape in real time.

I don't know who decides these "days", I was out all day (another job interview out of town) but would've watched at least one tape to celebrate if I'd been home.

The only way VHS has "come back" is for retro-ness, as that's how many people saw certain movies for the first time. I've seen some people put their low-budget movies out on VHS as a joke also.
