The Toy Box
Anyone watching this competitive reality show about the next new toy which mattel will pick up ?
Having the kids as judges is taking things a bit far, have them as consultants or something but having bratty kids as actual decision makers is stupid.
Glad that stupid niya doll which we have seen fail on heaps of other shows didn't get through
This show could have been good, as it is, it's a bit of a train wreck

Re: The Toy Box
I watched the first episode two weeks back and was ambivalent about it, and then let the last two pile up. I'm kind of on the fence about cutting them loose. It's a show where each week's winning toy will be in a showdown in the final week, but the episodes themselves are being shown wildly out of order.
If the show were played straight it might be easier to swallow. Eric Stonestreet is host, but he's given jokes to deliver, which he does with a forced "cutesy-ness", then he'll switch to a deadpan "sincere" tone. The adult experts play it straight, but the "kid" experts ham it up.

It's a cute, harmless show. I find the male host doesn't bring anything to the table and will usually skip over his segments.
Are the kids coached for funny and informative answers? You betcha. Why else would kids care about the price of these toys? I'm surprised they don't rotate the kids each episode. The British girl seems awfully old compared to the other kids.

I have had this on in the background for at least 2 episodes while doing other things. I don't like it much - the kids are precocious and it really seems like Eric Stonestreet doesn't want to be there. He seems to be testy when talking to the inventors. I wonder if his agent made him take this gig in case Modern Family is done.

Re: The Toy Box
the kids are beyond annoying, especially the boy in the blazer
You can't have boys judge dolls !
actually just about everything about this show is annoying. If it was done seriously it could have been good
also would want to see more tech oriented toys

Wife and I gave this a whirl (episode with the parachute toy and grandmother dolls). Wow....terrible. I mean Scarface quotes from the annoying red headed kid? It would be infinitely more interesting if you got to see REAL kids in focus groups giving actual age appropriate feedback rather than this scripted garbage.

Re: The Toy Box
I watched one, maybe two episodes. Big age difference and maturity difference in the kids; like many reality shows - some of the participants are selected to watch them go down in flames (like one woman who basically burst into angry tears, "This toy needs to be made! I've spent my life on it! How dare you call it stupid!" (to the experts, not the kids.)
Stonestreet seemed to talk to many of the inventors with quite a bit of innuendo.
I didn't see the ep with the winning toy, the ones I saw seemed to be pinata-heavy, which was odd.
The winning toy looks kinda stupid, actually.
Not a fan of "reality" shows in general, and this one isn't changing that.

Re: The Toy Box
The format needs a lot of refinement and I don't think the host is particularly good. On the other hand, it's dirt cheap to make and I have a hunch that toy manufacturer is footing much of its bill.

Re: The Toy Box
That is true about it being cheap
Where as the Voice and shows like that pay big to their big name judges, this show can pay their judges in toys

Will be curious to see how low the ratings for this can go and not be cancelled,it's essentially a Mattell infomercial so even at .1 rating the Network could be making money from it by dumping it to a Saturday.

Re: The Toy Box
They also cut out the "at home with the toy inventor" segments. I actually enjoyed those and hearing them talk about what went into the development of their toy and how much time and money they've already sunk into it. I'm sure that saves a lot of the budget though since they don't have to go to all those different locations.

Re: The Toy Box
They should do
Kids as judges for the first round
Industry experts to choose the weekly winner who goes through to the grand final
Then Viewer voting in the finale to determine the winner

Re: The Toy Box
I know that a season 3 for this was already very unlikely, but what would they do without Toys R Us? I suppose they could always partner with Target or Walmart to sell the winning toy.
