Fuck! With the exception of his completely out-of-place performance in the last Indiana Jones movie I liked everything I saw him in.

At least The Daily Mail has a proper headline. The Independent called him a "Harry Potter actor".

Bummer.
Fitting at least that the first member of the Nostromo crew to die was the first member of the Nostromo crew to die (I think).

He was beyond brilliant in one of the absolute masterpieces of cinema: The Elephant Man.

He certainly seemed to have the market cornered on dystopian future movies.

Thank you kefrank. When I think of John Hurt, and his impressive body of work, "The Elephant Man" immediately comes to mind first. His performance was just stellar. And the film, as you said, is a masterpiece. David Lynch's best IMO.

His performances that most affected me were The Elephant Man, Caligula in I,Claudius, 1984, and his voice work in Watership Down. When I was a kid, I must have watched Watership Down dozens of times...before VHS!
The Harry Potter thing kind of reminds me of Alec Guinness and his supposed disdain for Star Wars. After the career he had and to be remembered for one part he did for a lark.
