Movies that are good for kids AND adults?

Serious question as my four year old is really starting to get into movies. Over the last few years, what movies (that aren't Pixar/Disney) have you seen that you and your kids really liked? I got Cloudy/Meatballs since that seemed to be good for both and just picked up Storks since it was $10. Thanks.

^The Lego Movie is one that I watched over and over with my kids. It's completely ridiculous, but it just works on so many levels. I have 3 girls who were between the ages of 4 and 6 when it came out, and they preferred it to Frozen.

I liked the Lego movie up until the "reveal" after which I hated it.

Because you glue your Lego creations together?

Seriously though, I don't know that I've heard that perspective before. What about that made you do a 180 on the whole movie?

I did not at all care for the fact that it was just a parable about a lonely kid and his absentee dad. I enjoyed it for what it was before that. My wife felt the same way. Although she was younger my kid was completely confused.

I really liked the first Cloudy but not so much the second one. Didn't really like Storks. I'll have to dig up a list of kids movies and see what ones that we saw and what we enjoyed and didn't.

Despicable Me perhaps? The sequel is ok too, but Minions is strictly kid stuff

I would have said Zootopia, but he asked for stuff that isn't Disney/Pixar.

I know this was spun out of a side topic in the Moana thread, but I think a more appropriate subject line would be, "Movies that are good for kids AND adults" as that's really what Josh is looking for

The Black Stallion is one that comes to mind, though I recall the ship fire and sinking being quite scary when I saw the film as a little kid.

Minions was the first movie in the theater that my 4 year old niece saw, and she absolutely loved it! Then we tried to show her Despicable Me at home, and she didn't have the patience to get through it.

Maybe Shaun The Sheep Movie? I watched it by myself and perhaps children wouldn't understand some of the jokes. It's been awhile since I watched it, but I do remember highly enjoying it..

Just saw that bear with the blue coat movie. Can't remember the name of the character. That was surprisingly good. Not sure why I didn't see it. Guess the trailers didn't convince me or whatever. I remember them always showing the bath tub scene in the marketing though. Can't remember else about the ads.

How to Train Your Dragon is my personal favorite CGI movie.

Another vote for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Funnier than it had any right to be.

I'm one of the few who absolutely hated Dispicable Me. I thought the minions were cute but imagine they work best in small doses. Haven't bothered with their movie.

IMO, it also felt pretty hypocritical considering Lego is mostly known nowadays for building blocks that are made to build one, and only one, creation (Star Wars ships, Disney castle, etc.)

re: Movies that are good for kids AND adults?

While a few have done so, I'm going against the grain with some non-animated films. I'd consider these family-friendly and while I can't remember scene-for-scene should there be anything that's over the head of a 4-year old, I believe they'd keep the interest of young ones and have been movies I've enjoyed as well.

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid films
The Night at the Museum films
The Little Rascals
Willy Wonka
Homeward Bound
Annie (I'm partial to the '80s version)
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
Home Alone
Pee Wee's Big Adventure (skip the Large Marge scene unless you want your young ones to have nightmares. )

These came to mind quickly. Probably many more along these lines that qualify.

And good call on Paddington above.

The kid wasn't lonely and the dad wasn't absentee... it was more about the kid being creative/imaginative and the dad being structured and set in his ways
