Star Trek Original Motion Picture 50th Anniversary DVD question

Hi all,

I'm kinda' tired of trying to find info on the net about these new 2016 50th Anniversary DVD sets. All I can find is Blu-ray info.

http://shop.startrek.com/imgcache/pr...tl&sn=startrek

Can anybody tell me (or point me towards) a list of special features for the DVDs in the above set?

sign of the times, studios trying to phase out standard def dvd in favor of bluray, so that's what they promote. do you not have a bluray player yet? you do realize that bluray players are backwards compatible with standard def dvd discs

Yeah, I realize all of the above. I have an old tv, an old player and haven't found the need to upgrade. I'm rather minimalist when it comes to my entertainment. Recent Star Trek deals had me curious to finally want to own the show and I figured, hell, might as well add the movies.

I don't however, intend on upgrading to an HD tv or anything to watch them. Just wondering if the new 50th Anniversary sets came with any bells and whistles.

Based on what little I've read about this set it sounds like nothing more than a repackage job of the 2009 set. Same films, transfers, and special features. There's a review of that one here on DVDtalk.

I bought the 50th Anniversary Editions, individual seasons (as opposed to the box set as I read reviews suggesting the box set was not the greatest packaging job), each disc has tidbits of special features (as opposed to an extra disc with all the special features). Paid $14.96 per season at Walmart, $45 total. I'm happy with mine.

Well I went in on Cyber Monday and they had the Blu Ray set for $49.99. I decided it was time to jump ship...

...annnnd now I wonder where Blu Ray has been all my life.

You now need to start checking Amazon U.K. deals on region free BR sets. I picked up the region free BR "Star Trek: Stardate Collection - The Movies 1-10" for ~$32 back in March from them. Pretty much that same set.

Are all BR Players region free?

If so that opens a lot of doors!

No, they have to be specially modified.

Bombay Electronics in Chicago sells various ones.

https://www.bombayelectronics.com/

You can get one for as low as $150 with free shipping. There is a free 1 year warranty as well.

There are a few other retailers based in Chicago as well that sell region free players. And there are refurbished options. For me I went with a new player with the free warranty.

No. Some can be modified via a code and others require hardware modification. You can google your player model and add "region free code" to see if there's a code which can be entered to make it region free.

BUT there are *lots* of "region free" BR disc releases that are far less expensive from Amazon U.K. than their US counterpart. I recently purchased the region free ST:TNG complete BR set for ~$66 US *shipped*. Deals on region free titles are posted regularly in the Amazon.co.uk Boxset Deals thread.

Adding on to what BobO'Link said, the old PAL vs NTSC issue with overseas dvds is no longer an issue on most HD content. Why that is, I do not know.
Bottom line is there are a lot of overseas blue ray releases that play just fine on regular, unaltered American players.
