Robert Redford to retire from acting

In a long published interview with his grandson, Robert Redford says he’ll retire from acting after his next two movies are finished. “I’ve got two acting projects in the works,” he told Dylan Redford. “Once they’re done, then I’m going to say, “Okay, that’s goodbye to all that,” and then just focus on directing.”
The films in question, both of which are in preproduction, are Our Souls at Night, with Jane Fonda, and Old Man with a Gun,with Casey Affleck and Sissy Spacek. The Sundance founder said he’ll focus on directing after that.
The elder Redford, whose only acting Oscar nom came for Best Picture winner The Sting (1974), won an Academy Award for directing Ordinary People (1980) and received an Honorary Oscar in 2002. He also earned Best Director and Picture noms for 1994’s Quiz Show.
His long acting career began in early-1960s TV with roles on such popular series are Maverick, Playhouse 90, Perry Mason, Route 66 and a memorable lead role as the kind personification of Death opposite a frightened Gladys Cooper in the Twilight Zone episode “Nothing in the Dark.” He continued working mostly in television into the mid-’60s, when he appeared in such film and The Chase and Barefoot in the Dark.
Redford would become a full-fledged movie star in 1969 with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, his first pairing with his future The Sting partner Paul Newman. That same year Redford would reteam with Butch Cassidy co-star Katharine Ross in Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here and toplined the skiing movie Downhill Racer with Gene Hackman.
Redford starred in numerous 19709s movies including The Candidate, Jeremiah Johnson, The Great Gatsby, The Great Waldo Pepper, All the President’s Men, Three Days of the Condor, A Bridge Too Far and The Electric Horseman. Later film roles included The Natural, Out of Africa, Indecent Proposal, The Horse Whisperer — which he also directed — and, most recently, A Walk in the Woods, Truth and Pete’s Dragon.
Redford made his directing debut with ORdinary People and would go on to helm such pics as A River Runs Through It, The Legend of Bagger Vance, Lions for Lambs and The Company You Keep.

Well, he did one of Marvel's best movies, so he checked that box.
Newman's been gone for, what? 8 years? Now Redford's retiring as an actor? It's the end of that era...
And for me that's really weird since I can remember when those guys were still fairly young and VERY popular among young moviegoers (back in the 70's). It doesn't seem like all that long ago...

One last job. It’s a theme that’s powered many Hollywood crime stories. For Robert Redford, “one last job” isn’t just one of the loose themes in his forthcoming movie The Old Man & The Gun: The film is quite literally his final acting gig.
In an interview with EW, the 81-year-old actor confirmed he was making good on his 2016 claim that he was retiring from acting. The Old Man & The Gun is the last film in which he’ll act.
“Never say never, but I pretty well concluded that this would be it for me in terms of acting, and [I’ll] move towards retirement after this ’cause I’ve been doing it since I was 21. I thought, Well, that’s enough. And why not go out with something that’s very upbeat and positive?” Redford said.
He noted that the “framework” and the story in Old Man helped shepherd him to this conclusion. In the David Lowery-directed film, Redford plays Forrest Tucker, the real-life career criminal in love with his self-appointed job of robbing banks and breaking out of prison. “To me, that was a wonderful character to play at this point in my life,” the Oscar winner said of Tucker, whose stickups spanned over 60 years. “The thing that really got me about him — which I hope the film shows — is he robbed 17 banks and he got caught 17 times and went to prison 17 times. But he also escaped 17 times. So it made me wonder: I wonder if he was not averse to getting caught so he that could enjoy the real thrill of his life, which is to escape?”
When it comes committing to or escaping future directing projects, Redford indicated “we’ll see about that.” In 1981, the native Californian won a Best Director Academy Award for 1980’s Ordinary People; he’s helmed eight other feature films and also founded the Sundance Institute and the Sundance Film Festival.
The Old Man & The Gun, which Redford also produced, co-stars Sissy Spacek, Danny Glover, Tom Waits, and Casey Affleck, and will be released via Fox Searchlight on Sept. 28. It will be playing at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
Redford kicked off his acting career in TV and film in 1960, nearly 60 years ago.

I've love a movie about a bunch of old actors in a hollywood nursing home somewhere, being plagued by some some evil spirit or something, and everyone thinks they are just goofing or suffering from dementia.

The last Redford movie I actually saw was OUT OF AFRICA (1985). The last one I saw in a theater was THE ELECTRIC HORSEMAN (1979).

Wow, not The Natural or even Sneakers?? I'll miss him for sure. I just wish him and Newman had the chance for one more film together.
Oh, and I love The Electric Horseman. It's one of those I'll watch anytime it's on.
