"Tucker & Dale vs. Evil" Reviews/Discussion - 2016 Comedy Challenge: Week 1

For discussion during the 2016 Comedy Challenge. Watch it on the evening of October 31 for double credit with the Horror Challenge!

No double credit for me, I watched it yesterday. I think I'm up to at least five viewings now, starting with the pre-release convention circuit, and I love it every single time.

Heck, maybe I'll watch it again later in the week.

Re: "Tucker & Dale vs. Evil" Reviews/Discussion - 2016 Comedy Challenge: Week 1

I had some free time this afternoon so I turned on Tucker & Dale. I have to say while there are some good lines in it, I got a bit tired of it after about 45 minutes. Got a bit frustrated with how no one was listening-after about the 3rd or 4th college student killing themselves trying to get the guys, I was ready for it to finish-felt that when Tucker was hanging upside down, it should have been the end, not another 40+ minutes.

I did like the "this vacation sucks" line.

There were several good one liners...but by the end, I just wanted all the kids to die and have the movie be over with.

The heart to heart between Dale and Tucker at the end was probably the best part of the whole movie.

Ok, the last 20 minutes or so were fun to watch. I just wish the first hour was as fun!

I watched it last night and found it amusing. (It was well after midnight so that might have affected my mood.) Because it played off so many horror conventions, it was a nice finish to the Horror Challenge, and I always like to see Alan Tudyk get work. I was a little thrown, though, when the students actually did start dying, as I expected something more lighthearted, like more of a traditional mistaken-identity comedy. I mean, it was totally in-bounds for a horror film, even a hybrid genre one--and we eventually got a psycho killer--but it just took me in a weird direction.

I decided to watch it on Prime instead of Netflix because I use my daughter's account for the latter and prefer not to stick weird things in her viewing history. Picture quality wasn't great, though--probably SD.

Good film and good cast, but probably won't watch it again anytime soon.

Ah, I just looked up who Kristina Bowden was, and it turns out I'd seen her in 30 Rock!

Maybe that's what I didn't like-I was expecting something a little more lighthearted and it turned into a gory (ish) film? I found it a bit repetitive as well. I watched it on Prime too, but didn't think the picture looked bad. *shrugs*

I don't think I'll watch it again on my own, but if someone suggested it, I wouldn't not watch it either.

I thought that she looked familiar too, but after seeing her filmography, I don't recognize her from them...

I've seen this movie about 5-6 times already. But I really enjoy it, so I didn't mind watching it again.

If it's your first time view, and you weren't crazy about it, I'd suggest revisiting it sometime in the future. When I first saw it, it didn't live up to my expectations. But I appreciated it more the second time I watched it.

I hope they find some time to do the sequel.

Film probably works best for horror, particularly splatter, fans. It did grow on me a bit too, I remember being slightly disappointed the first viewing, still don't completely love the last act.

Yep, first time viewing. Like I said, I wouldn't put this on myself, but I wouldn't argue if someone else wanted to watch it.

Funny, the last act is the part I enjoyed!

BigDave is correct ... Let some time pass and revisit it (maybe next year). It is such an odd film that it defies almost all expectations -- that unsettling skews the viewers opinion. I knew nothing about it going in, but my expectations were set early by the film. I was initially wondering "What is Alan Tudyk doing in this?" That was quickly turned upside-down and I gleefully strapped in for the ride.

I am not a fan of gory-horror because I believe most of those films simply are gore for the sake of gore (gore-porn) ... I loved this though! Every twist had me in stitches and the use of gore was done with a wry smile.

Re: "Tucker & Dale vs. Evil" Reviews/Discussion - 2016 Comedy Challenge: Week 1

This one was a pleasant surprise when I did a first time viewing during the Horror Challenge. I was pleased that it held up just as well on the second viewing I did this week. That in spite of it being only 2-3 weeks since that first viewing. I caught a few things I'd missed the first time around and laughed at almost every place I'd laughed during the first viewing.

I think it helps greatly to be a horror fan when watching this one, even if you're *not* a fan of "splatter" type films (and I'm not).

I totally get the college kids *not* understanding or listening to anything Tucker or Dale says trying to convince them they're *not* serial/hillbilly killers. It all goes back to the kids paranoia and the look Dale gave them as they passed their car early in the film. Of course the "Hillbillies killed a bunch of tourists around here" story didn't help their mentality about our good natured country boys only adding to their hysteria when things started going wrong.

Horror comedy is difficult to pull off and this one does it well.
