"He had been retired in recent years due to Alzheimer’s."
He apparently leaves behind a 12 year old son.
Both of those add to the suckage.

I didn't realize he directed Losin' it.
Wonder Boys is my favourite of his, followed by L.A. Confidential.

Talented guy.
Early on in his career he also wrote The Silent Partner, a nifty little suspense thriller.

I used to see him all the time at the American Cinemateque in LA. A congenial guy who loved movies. LA Confidential is so good.

Damn, I didn't realize he was so old. I thought he was in his late 50s or early 60s. It's a damn shame. I hoped he had another great movie or two left in him.

Watched Wonder Boys on TV (something I rarely do), but between the writing and Douglas' performance, was hard to turn off. Great flick.

LA Confidential was maybe my second favorite movie of the past 20 years. It was truly fantastic. Glad he at least won a screenplay Oscar for it.

Didn't realize he directed the HBO movie Too Big to Fail. L.A. Confidential was his peak though he had a string of solid movies starting in the late 80s on up.
Another call out to The Silent Partner, White Dog and to add, Never Cry Wolf. All decent movies worth checking out.

L.A. Confidential is a fantastic film in so many ways. That Hanson then also made 8 Mile and Wonder Boys means he's got a nice legacy. I have not seen a bad movie he directed.

Nobody's even mentioned The Hand That Rocks The Cradle. A sneaky-good trashy thriller in the "_____ from Hell" genre -- and his first hit.

I remember taking a date to see LA Confidential in theaters. We had dinner before and drank entirely too much wine. We got in to see the movie and neither of us could remember much from it; we were more interested in getting out and going to someone's apartment. So it was a big MEH from me.
Then I saw it again a few weeks later and was FLOORED how much I loved it. One of the all-time greats from Hollywood over the past 20 years. I enjoyed much of his other work but nothing enthralled me like LA Confidential. It's a brilliant, brutal, potent slice of cinema.
And thrilling entertainment. Once again, proving you don't need to turn your brain off to be thoroughly entertained.

Will have to watch L.A. this weekend. Just a masterpiece in noir storytelling. Wonder Boys needs an HD release with extras if possible. Douglas was so good.
