Nice. Eddie in a dramatic role.
"Mr. Church" tells the story of a unique friendship that develops when a little girl and her dying mother retain the services of a talented cook - Henry Joseph Church. What begins as a six month arrangement instead spans fifteen years, and creates a family bond that lasts forever.

Looks a little cheesy, but I do wonder if starting in 2017 we may be saying "Academy Award Nominee Eddie Murphy"

Cheesy and "magical negro-ish". But I'm willing to put up with all that to see Eddie do more drama and less silly comedy shit.

Wow I surely didn't see this coming.
20% Rotten
- Bruce Beresford's film is remarkable for how it manages to indulge so many offensive and shopworn clichés at once.
- Bruce Beresford has made another film in which a saintly black servant teaches the white folks how to live.
- From the director of Driving Miss Daisy (Bruce Beresford) comes Tribeca 2016 selection Mr. Church (or Cooking For Miss Daisy), where another African American worker plays mentor to his Caucasian female “boss.”
- If you have been waiting almost three decades for a remake of “Driving Miss Daisy,” Bruce Beresford has the film for you (again).
- Bruce Beresford directs Mr. Church as though he regrets not piling enough sentiment into his 1989 film Driving Miss Daisy, or as if he misses the accusations of racially tinged paternalism surrounding it.
- ...It’s hard not to be reminded of Beresford’s “Driving Miss Daisy” — and that’s not necessarily a good thing.
- Mr. Church comes across as the hoariest of “magical negro” stereotypes, and his duty caring for Caucasian women in need makes his tale something of a complementary side dish to director Bruce Beresford’s “Driving Miss Daisy.”

That's too bad about the reviews. I would have liked for them to be better. I like dramatic Murphy and thought he was robbed of the Oscar for Dreamgirls...

Too bad it sounds like Driving Miss Daisy 2.
