OK, so it's obvious that Ghostbusters won't make back its 144 million dollar budget, b/c that's not even including marketing. It'll hit 100 million domestic TOPS.
So, how much in the red will Sony be after this?

Depends on international sales and how well it holds up over the next few weekends.

I've seen many posts on box office forums stating GB will wind up with $120-150mm because of the usual multiples for Feig's films. But I see this one performing more like a standard tentpole. Next weekend will prove which theory is correct.
I'm guessing it just limps over $100mm.
You jest, but some executive at Fox is thinking about setting up a meeting.

It'll be interesting to see how GB does with Star Trek Beyond and Ice Age: Collision Course opening next week.

Aware, there are a lot of territories to cover out there that aren't China (thankfully, for them at least). It should do really well in South Korea, but yeah losing China is a big blow -- they seem to like anything big budget.
Mad Max never wound up getting released in China last year either, was curious how a movie like that would do there.

Sure, should make some decent coin in other territories but in China, that's a huge chunk of change. That country is the main reason IIRC there will be a Pacific Rim 2 (made $112M there). Heck, even Need for Speed managed $66M there and supposedly they will be producing a sequel.

It's already having an affect. In the next Bond film, instead of meeting the villain in a casino over a game of Baccarat, they changed it to Chinese checkers.

I own that VHS and have seen the movie many times but can't remember what scene you're talking about, my brain is failing me these days.

Unless movies make insane numbers in China, it isn't the future of box office, where they take a huge cut of the box office compared to most other countries.

I assume it's situational - for instance, Legendary Pictures is owned by a Chinese company now, so I imagine their profits off distribution there would be more profitable then say a primary US based studio needing to find a partner. I also wonder how those large Chinese investments in movies play out, like for Iron Man 3.
