Strange Days -- still no good DVD but high def on cable
"Strange Days" is one of my favorite films. Kathryn Bigelow really came up with a messed up in a good way film. Ralph Fiennes never really played a character like this again.
So it has always annoyed me that there was never a proper DVD release. A 1999 DVD with a non-anamorphic transfer is all we've ever gotten. I thought for sure after Bigelow won the Oscar that would push the studio to release a proper anamorphic transfer, maybe even Blu-ray. Nope, nothing.
And yet as I type this I am watching an anamorphic, high def version of it on Starz, and it looks fantastic. So why the hell can't we get a home video release? Are back catalogue films of middling success not worth the effort?

I heard it was in Germany or someplace like that. I have the DTS laserdisc and the sound on that is killer, but of course the picture leaves a bit to be desired.

Yeah it got a region B release in Germany a couple of years ago, and the disc does look pretty good. It's pretty cheap and worth getting if you like the movie and can find a decent region free player.
And at this point I doubt that Fox is going to release it or an anamorphic dvd in the states.

Cameron doesn't seem too preoccupied with getting his older films out on Blu-ray in North America. The Abyss is finally coming out next year, but it's taken forever to make it happen. I would love Strange Days to get the Blu-ray treatment it deserves, but i'm afraid it won't happen for a very long time, if ever.

Well, it's a Fox title.
I'm drawing a blank here, but does Fox license their stuff out to anyone like Shout, Criterion, or Twilight Time? I don't see this being much of a priority for them to do in-house, so giving it to a boutique label is probably our only hope for a blu-ray.

They should just release the existing disc in the US and be done with it.
