Weekend BO 7/1 - 7/3 -- Dory dominates, BFG flops hard

Safe to say ID4-2 and Free State are flops. Not sure on Tarzan. BFG though... bad numbers. I live in SoCal and didn't see one ad for it.

1 1 Finding Dory BV $41,900,542 -42.6% 4,305 - $9,733 $372,250,144 - 3
2 N The Legend of Tarzan WB $38,135,000 - 3,561 - $10,709 $38,135,000 $180 1
3 N The Purge: Election Year Uni. $30,870,000 - 2,796 - $11,041 $30,870,000 $10 1
4 N The BFG BV $19,584,969 - 3,357 - $5,834 $19,584,969 $140 1
5 2 Independence Day: Resurgence Fox $16,500,000 -59.8% 4,091 -39 $4,033 $72,657,073 $165 2
6 3 Central Intelligence WB (NL) $12,330,000 -32.4% 3,166 -342 $3,895 $91,767,074 $50 3
7 4 The Shallows Sony $9,000,000 -46.4% 2,962 - $3,038 $35,251,647 $17 2
8 6 Free State of Jones STX $4,134,000 -45.4% 2,781 -34 $1,487 $15,199,711 $50 2

At least ID4 2 made decent bank overseas. But I'm guessing they learned their lesson by now. Dory is killing it. Not sure what else is coming out to compete against it now. Thought ID4 was going to come close, but I guess not.

I called it last week about Dory being #1 again. Very strong fins.

I thought The BFG would do better. Maybe it should've been a Christmas release.

Probably almost anywhere would have been better than 2 weeks after Dory. It's really not like Disney to release 2 kids films so close together.

BFG couldn't have been more poorly marketed. I'm not surprised it's tanking.

Disney is having an INSANE year. I think this might be unprecedented. Four $300million+ grossers, two of them either at $400m+ or will soon reach that landmark, two well-received animated films (both at 90%+ RT) making huge bank, a massively popular Marvel film, and still more Marvel and Star Wars films to come before year's end.

Is The BFG Spielberg's lowest grossing film ever?

It was poorly marketed in the sense that the message that was being put out didn't draw a crowd. However, there were ads all over the place, -you couldn't escape them, -and they showed pretty much the movie they had made. It was a Fantasy film aimed at the Kids/Family audience, and they were pushing a big FX-filled story over big name stars. Steven Speilberg (and his "ET" reputation), and, of course, the original book are the "stars" they were selling. The one thing that I'll agree is bad marketing is the title (which is meaningless if you don't know the book), but I guess they were stuck with that.

Perhaps it's just that mnot enough people were interested in the product they were selling.

I can only speak for myself, but as an adult with no children, there was nothing to motivate me to go to the theater to see it. Frankly, I find the Mark Rylance (as the giant) kind of creepy, but I guess he was supposed to reflect a kindly "Grandpa" figure. It just came across as overly sweet to me.

Of course, you should also consider the budgets and the times in which they were produced. I like the fact that I'm reading an article (elsewhere) that's asking if Speilberg's washed up (after BFG), while noting that his last film ("Bridge of Spies") was profitable.

It's too early to tell. But in terms of opening weekends no, Bridge of Spies, Munich, War Horse, The Terminal* and Tintin opened lower, as well as pretty much all his pre-1990 movies.

* - The Terminal barely opened lower, adjusted it'd be much higher.

Maybe they should have renamed BFG. I hear that, I think Big Fucking Gun from video games. Not something I'd want to take my kids to. Maybe call it spell it out as Big Friendly Giant. At least that gives a hint of what its about.
