Hey everyone, ok here's the deal......I just got a DVD player. It's a GE(General Electric). Anyway, well, I bought two movies along with it....I bought Gone In Sixty Seconds and Gladiator. I connected it with the super video plug. The player is great and produces a crisp picture but I've got some concerns on somethings.......now and then there are these little streaks, like a digital imperfection on the screen....they aren't streaks that go across the whole screen, they just *blip* across a quarter or half of the way.....this happens only sometimes during a movie and will go through only a few of them within a 5-10 minute time period and then it stops and when I rewind it they're not there. I also had a little pause but RARELY. I've heard that this is from layer changes but when I rewind it, the pause isn't there. What should I do? Should I be concerned? Are any of these things normal??? Anyway, hope you guys who have owned these for a while(and those of you techies) can help me out here. Thanks everyone.

I would return the dvd player and get another one. Hope you kept the receipt. I'm not a tech expert but that's what i would do.

The brief pauses still sound like layer changes to me. Next time it happens write down what movie you're watching and where it happens and post back here. Someone else who has the same movie will be able to confirm whether or not it's the layer change.
The lines going part way across the screen do concern me. This should not be, so I'd return the player for a replacement.

GE isnt exactly top of the line as far as players go..so dont be surprised if it doesnt play such titles as Abyss,T2,Independence Day,Jaws, etc...

If you can afford it, spend about $50-100 more and get a better player!!!

In addition to returning the player, try exchanging the discs for new copies of each. Could be a transfer glitch.

Don't ever buy anything from GE that doesn't involve lightbulbs and kitchen appliances.
They are an evil, incompetent company when it comes to electronics. F'em. Follow the advice of other posters here and take the machine back for a refund/exchange. Spend the extra money on a decent player, you won't regret it.

Thanks for the fast replies everyone. I've decided to take everyone's advice and return the player. I won't return the movies(I have like 10 of them now) because the problems I was having were on every movie. What brand should i get though??? I'm looking to spend around 200 for it...what's really good for 200???

RCA makes excellent DVD players. They also, by many accounts, handle layer changes better than any other player out there.

The three best choices are Pioneer, Panasonic and Sony. Sony's cheapest will run you $200 to $250. All are considered to have excellent picture quality. I have a SOny myself and have never had a bit of trouble with it.
I have two reservations about Toshiba. First, it seems like some of them have playback problems with some discs, although that seems to be a thing of the past. The bigger problem with Toshibas is how they downconvert anamorphically-enhanced DVDs for playback on standard TVs. The system Tosh uses tends to produce kind of a harsh picture.

My first player is a Toshiba 3108. Played great until the Aliens set came out. Choked on those discs, then ID4, then Abyss, etc., etc. Won't play MI:2, Gladiator, The Perfect Storm, etc., etc.
My 2nd player is an inexpensive RCA (less than $250, even cheaper 6 months later). Plays like a champ. No problems at all. Just keeps on going, and going, and going.
So, barring bargain basement players, anything from the $200 range and up should be a perfectly good workhorse.

You wanna get the best you can afford. My Sony retails for about $300. It seemed like alot when I bought it but I look at my roughly $2000 worth of DVDs and it seems like a smart move now.

Sony DVPS360: MSRP = $300 which means you can find it for $250 or less at just about any large electronics store... Quality unit and a great place to start IMO...

I highly recommend the Pioneer series, especially the now-discontinued [?] DV-525 model... both my parents and I have this player and it works like a charm... no problem, and layer changes are minimally noticeable, if at all...

I also must say that RCA makes damn good dvd players. I've never had any problems with any dvds and I have never noticed a layer change on any of my dvds.

Panasonic DVD-RV30... I have one, and with the rebate from panasonic, it's 199... here's a link to crutchfield. and it comes in Silver!
My first player was a $500 Toshiba SD3108. It had problems with a variety of discs, but the worst was with Alien, with which it locked up tight as a drum. The day after the demise of Divx, I bought one of the Proscan closeouts as a second player. It worked so well that it ended up replacing the 3108, which has been in storage ever since. A few weeks later, I bought an RCA (related to Proscan) 5231Z for another family member, and it, too has worked fine ever since.
My two bits on RCA players.

You can do better by getting this dvd player from Amazon.com and using their $50 off $200 coupon and get it for $129.99 + shipping. Also they are back in stock once again but who knows for how long, they sell out very quickly.

Now that you have entered the world of DVD you need to loose the old VHS lingo! We don't say rewind when referring to DVD's! When you do get a working DVD player you will kick yourself for waiting so long to get one. Enjoy!
