Yeah, the marketing for ID4 was really lacking...because apparently the film is. Can't hide behind a bad film any more... unreal that it might not hit 100m domestically. 20yrs and THIS is what they came up with? I might not even rent it... I didn't see either of the Taken sequels, didn't want to ruin the first one for me.

Is the last sentence regarding Taken THAT random, or am I missing some kind of reference?

I hope Hollywood is getting the message that unless your sequel is made by Marvel, Pixar, or Lucasfilm (or, basically, Disney), we're not that interested.
I guess we won't be seeing that planned third Independence Day movie.

I think the sticky on weekly BO is altogether pointless and discussion-killing. Hardly what a dying forum needs, but given decision making around here lately...

If someone makes a post in a sticky thread, it's always seen in the "New Posts" portion of the forum.
That is unless you never read the forum via that route.
This is an issue that happens in TV Talk as well. We have a sticky that talks about shows getting renewed and cancelled, but no one ever seems to notice it even when posts are being made in it (during May especially).
I personally don't care, but I'm genuinely curious how people claim they never see or notice them.

Going back to Independence Day: Resurgence, maybe making a sequel 20 years later was a little too long, but it's the kind of movie that you're either going to see or not.
There's people who are fans of this kind of movie and those who hate it. I don't think tap dancing around a forum like this and waiting for John, Dick and Harry to gloat about how fucking awesome it is will convince someone who only moderately liked the 1st movie 20 years ago will convince them to see it.

Making an unneeded sequel twenty years later is bad enough, making one without its star is far worse.
I wonder how many sequels to star-driven hit movies (as opposed to franchise-driven movies like superhero movies or the Bond films) that lose their biggest star actually end up doing well at the box office. I can't think of any. Usually losing your lead star is the ultimate death knell for a sequel.

I know what you mean about Taken. Taken 2 is garbage, but Taken 3 makes it look like Seven Samurai in comparison. And for fans of Taken, it ruins Stuart's character (and 2 did a bit as well). That might seem like something to laugh about, since he's not a major character, but they really fucked it up.

Really?
Ghostbusters 2
Back to the Future 2
Men In Black 2
Die Hard 2
Terminator 2
Rocky 2
There must be thousands of examples.
When you talk about ones without the star attached, the number dwindles and the box office wilts.
Grease 2
The Bourne Legacy
Daddy Day Care 2
Evan Almighty
Dumb and Dumberer : When Harry Met Lloyd
The Flintsones in Viva Rock Vegas

The original ID4 is one of my favorite movies. The sequel was amazingly disappointing. That said, could the foreign box office still generate enough for the last one? I'd kind of like to see a fight in space.

Had my 12 year old daughter see ID4 on Friday before we went to see Resurgence on Saturday. She liked it, but really didn't care too much about it. We both agreed the sequel wasn't all that good. In addition, it's been years since I saw the original, and I tell you, that one doesn't really hold up well at all.
We also saw Finding Dory, which while not as good as the first, it was close to it. And it's nice that something like that can hold so much originality then we got from ID4's. ID4's are pretty much as cliched as can get when it comes to the aliens invading the planet kind of stuff.

This next weekend should be interesting. I don't have young kids so I don't know if they're interested in The BFG. Dory could be #1 again, or close to it.
