Contemporary films (2000-2016) that you think will be classics in over 30 years?
Which current films - 2000 to 2016 - do you think will be considered classics in over 30 years or so?
There are many good films and award-winning films now that wont necessarily be considered a classic after a long period of time. We have seen plenty of Best Pictures fade away. A movie like "Ordinary People" and "Kramer vs Kramer" were quite excellent dramas but I wouldnt be quick to call them classics. And then we have films like "Blade Runner" and "Citizen Kane" that became respected as classics.
There are probably quite a bunch but I'll just start with one guess:
Ryan Gosling's Drive
This is a film that I didnt care for at first but has gotten increasingly better each time I watch it. Drive also has a nice vibe mixture of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s yet still being a product of the 2000s. Good storytelling, memorable visuals, cool soundtrack and incredible acting may make this film a classic in the future. I still dont expect many people to have seen this film too just as I come across average folks who have never seen Blade Runner. I would be disappointed if Criterion doesnt release this film eventually.
What are your predictions?

I guess my idea of "classic" is different from everyone else. I think home video has skewed what a classic film used to be.

Drive was the first movie that came to mind when I read the thread topic.
I'll think of some others later.

I think the only way to know for sure what will be considered classics, is to ask some millennials.

Millenials are considered to be the group born from roughly 1982 - 2000 a chunk of which saw these in theaters. It'll be whatever Generation Alpha is still watching.

Ah dammit, that range includes me, although I find it VERY hard to identify with anyone born after 1995.

But you can thank news programs and social media for making it ultra murky. It's kind of how people use the term "hipster" incorrectly to describe any trend or group they don't like. The term "Millennial" has been tied to the generation that whines, lives at home and is lazy... as coined by Millennials.

Mad Max FR's execution is top notch, world is well established, there's a good bit of subtext, several solid character arcs, and it follows a borderline Shakespearian narrative.
It also features a blind mutated guy shredding a flame spewing guitar while ridiculously modified vehicles pursue one another in a barren wasteland where lymphoma infected servants throw each other off giant moving platforms to impress their ruler in an attempt to be seen and guided into the next life.
It's ridiculousness, really well done. But certainly not for everyone.

There are plenty of revered movies that I simply didn't find entertaining.

Idiocracy will easily be a classic. It may even go down as the greatest documentary film ever made.
