Why Won't My DVD Player Play DTS Right?

Question here isn't as dumb as it sounds, as my player (Phillips Magnavox 825) has a nice DTS label on the front of it. But when I hook it up (via Toslink) to the new DTS receiver I bought, the sound is terrible -- distorted, buzzy, gurgly, as if it were running through some sort of voice modulator. Voices lose all character, so that all males sound like they have the same voice. Very strange ... and a firmware upgrade CD from Phillips did nothing at all to fix the problem. (A very curious clue for some bright person: the problem does NOT occur with DTS tracks on Warner Brothers disks -- Twister, Lethal Weapon and Interview with a Vampire all sound fine -- but my other DTS disks -- Gladiator, Fantasia, T2 -- all sound like crap.)

Problem does not relate to the receiver, as I've now hooked a Sony 360 up to it and the DTS sound is fine. Hoping someone might have an idea as to what the problem is here.

So you are getting sound so my only suggestion which would be to make sure the new player is set to output DTS signal is probably a moot suggestion, so you may want to try to exchange the palyer if its new as it may be a problem with that unit.

Yeah, it sounds like everything is set up correctly, so it must be an incompatibility between your player and some discs. Double check the player menu to see that you are outputting the DTS bitstream. Also, check to make sure you have selected the DTS audio track before you play the movie. I know you've probably tried all this. You can't pin it down to a bad track, ES, or PCM problem -- all the discs vary except for studio. How about trying a digital coaxial connection, if possible. Any chance the Toslink is bad?

Yeah, worst case is you buy yourself a Sony 360, I guess.
