Got tickets for me and the wife for Saturday afternoon at the Drafthouse. Perfect movie for a beer and a burger.

Re: The Nice Guys (Black, 2016) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

Saw a free preview showing on Monday- didn't know what to expect, thought it would be more of a comedy. I'll likely need to see this at least one more time to have a valid opinion of it- picture at the theater was dark and sound a bit too low, and of course a few people in the audience talked too much. I did like the appearance of a Christie platter and projector console, though the platter was a later model than the time the movie was set in (and how did the film get back in the can right after it was done playing?) I liked the original Betamax/TV console too.

This was just a really fun movie. I would totally be up for a sequel.

Re: The Nice Guys (2016) D: Shane Black S: Gosling, Crowe

Wife and I both loved this one. Great chemistry between Crowe and Gosling, and the jokes landed pretty solidly for the most part. Really great 70's vibe to the whole thing too.

Unfortunately I saw where it only had a B- on the Cinemascore and the box office is looking pretty weak. Disappointing for sure. An original, funny, smart flick for adults can't find an audience.

Just got back for seeing this and loved it. Gossling and Crowe were perfect together. Great chemistry.

Saw it. I liked it a lot and found it quite amusing. However, I can totally understand how most people would not. Would have done better in October. Doubt we'll get a sequel, but I see it getting a cult following. Movie reminded me a bit of Big Lebowski.

Re: The Nice Guys (Black, 2016) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

Why do you doubt there will be a sequel? I can definitely see all of them doing another one, perhaps set in the 80's. The wife and I loved it. What really made the movie work was he chemistry between Gosling and Crowe. But was another great surprise was the chemistry between Angoirie Rice, who played Goslings daughter, and her interaction with both Gosling and Crowe. She held her own very well. Made for very good intense scenes when she was in trouble, especially during that party. I love how Black always gives LA a feel that it becomes another character, and this time during the 70's. The finale was very good, although the last conversation between the guys and Basinger's character should have been a bit better and tighter, not just some speech how Detroit will always be saved by people like her. But this was a damn good movie, and a much needed departure from the usual action fare.

The kid on the bike also cracked me up a lot.

My buddy who I saw this with has been texting me all night about the kid on the bike. The theater was roaring during that scene. I agree with your comment about Black really giving this a 70's feel. The attention to detail was amazing. The clothes, the cars, the billboards around town, the music. Right down to those watches with the wide leather wrist bands.

You usually have to be fiscally successful to get a sequel made.

And that's stopped how many sequels from being made?

A lot? Golden Compass, further Narnia entries, Terminator Genisys, Mortal Instruments (though they did turn it into a TV series after halting production on the sequel), Ender's Saga, Speed Racer off the top of my head. It could still do well on demand/blu I suppose (a la Austin Powers). It's tough to say for sure since they're sequels that don't exist?

At least this outgrossed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Re: The Nice Guys (Black, 2016) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

This isn't a big budget action flick by any means. And Black is responsible for some of Hollywoods biggest franchises. If he went to Warners and said he was going to make a sequel to this, the box office for this will matter a little, but not determine their decision. They like Black, they'll work with him. And this getting critical acclaim and so far audience approval doesn't hurt it any. It's Warner's more than Black to blame for putting it in the middle of action hero season resulting in the box office for it.

Actually, Warner didn't fund this one, they bought US rights to it after Joel Silver raised $50m for it to be produced. There's actually a good article here about his trials and tribulations in Hollywood. They are, however, apparently really happy with the movie itself. I do agree Summer is the wrong time for it.

Black's only huge hit franchise was Lethal Weapon, RDJ did him a solid by bringing him in for Iron Man 3.

All that said, I really do hope this has some legs.

Re: The Nice Guys (Black, 2016) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

I guess my point was that he as a screenwriter yields some big bucks. Sure RDJ brought him in, but he did have a big part with the screenplay for IM3. And while Predator didn't make a billion dollars, it spawned a lot of sequels based on his creation. But I see your point to an extent. At either rate, I too am hoping his has legs and does yield a sequel at some point. Ideally, it'd be great if this were a trilogy. I couldn't think of anything funnier then Gosling and Crowe stumble through stories like this set in the 80's and 90's after seeing this one.

I thought Black's contributions to Predator were basically a couple lines of dialog (that and he co-starred)? I know he's doing the upcoming version, but historically speaking.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. As has been mentioned the chemistry between Crowe and Gosling is great. The girl who played Holly was actually pretty good too I thought. I feel like this could have a lot of rewatch value.

Loved the daughter. Loved the setting. Loved the time period.

Saw this and Captain America back to back and found CA mind numbing by comparison.

Think you'll see good legs and worth of mouth from this film, hopefully it gets to 40-50 million despite the awful opening. Desperately need more films like this.

Interesting... I just got out of the flick, and while I was very much looking forward to it, I came out VERY underwhelmed.

First and foremost, I thought the daughter was terrible, and the whole "kid-hero-sidekick" thing is so forced and uninteresting. They try and make her out to be the voice of reason for her dad, but then the very next scene she does something completely idiotic. This movie would of been much better had they written her out.

The other thing I found very disappointing was that if you've seen the trailer (and I only saw the Red Band trailer), you've pretty much seen all the awesome over-the-top action stuff. That's what sold me on this movie in the first place, and yet there were no surprises left in the movie. The same can't be said for Captain America, where we were bombarded with trailers, and yet somehow there was so much great stuff in the flick that never made it to the trailers.

Not to say this was a terrible movie, far from it. But it's definitely a wait to stream it at home kind of flick.

I thought she was the best thing in the movie. I wouldn't have liked the movie nearly as much as I did without that character.

Ha, that's interesting. I couldn't stand her. Her telling Russell Crowe not to kill the dude at the end, are you kidding me? Russell Crowe was such an awesome character (the diner scene for example) but then they go and take that all away because a little girl is telling him not to.

And her dialogue was so forced and cliche... I groaned when she said "I need a drink," at the end of the flick. I'd expect something like that from a first time film writer.

But hey, to each their own.

It sounds like a bit of a re-hash of his daughter for Bruce Willis's character in "The Last Boy Scout". She was a bit obnoxious as well.
