I have about $1000 to spend on a new TV and I want a 36" set. Questions: I have heard good things about the Toshiba sets but the Sony does the 16x9 mode, which would be nice. However, I have heard of other problems with the Sonys. I have the money for the Toshiba now and would have to save a while longer for the Sony also, and I'm not sure it is worth the major difference in price (about $500). HELP!!!!

I've got 36" WEGA (FS12) that I wouldn't trade for any TV in that price range. If your interested in the WEGA:
1. Do a search on the forum and make a list of the problems that people have reported. . .just so you know.
2. Find out what you need to do to get the TV serviced--just in case. It's a 240+ lbs. TV, so you can't just throw it in the back of your car and drop it off somewhere.
3. Get the Video Essentials or Avia DVDs and get the set properly calibrated.
4. Make sure you have a TV stand that can handle it. . .and be prepared for some heavy lifting.
Hope this helps with the WEGA side. I don't know enough about the Toshibas to be much help there.

Thanks Matt for the WEGA info. I take it you have not experienced any problems with your set?

I have a 27" Wega and haven't had any of the problems people mention here. It seems like Sony products are hit or miss, lots of people have problems with them, and lots, including me, have bought a ton of there stuff and have no problems. I actually think we just hear more about Sony problems because they are the most common consumer level brand and more people buy their products than other brands so their are more problems because their are more products in use.

I got a 27" WEGA a while ago. The first set had a pinkish shade on the screen. It is very noticeable when the background is having bright colors. (manufactured in Aug 2000)
Then I got a replacement set manufactured in Oct 2000. It was fine after that.

I personally find the WEGAs too crisp for my viewing. I think that the Toshiba is a great TV, got a 32 inch recently. If I had qa satellite instead of cable and watched only DVDs maybe I could deal with the ultra fine WEGA, but everything looks grainy to me on the WEGA unless you set a good ways back. Better go to a store and jsut watch them for a while and see what you want. I love my Toshiba and would not trade it except for a big screen HDTV.

Thanks for the help folks.
Well, the purchase has been made and in the end I spent more than I should have and went with the Toshiba 50A60. After watching all the choices for a while I decided that size does matter. Now everyone in my family will be getting an invitation to a movie for Christmas because I just spent all my present money ON MYSELF (I'm so bad).
