Carved from a lifetime of experience that runs the gamut from incarceration to liberation, Dog Eat Dog is the story of three men who are all out of prison and now have the task of adapting themselves to civilian life. The California three strikes law looms over them, but what the hell, they're going to do it, and they're going to do it their way. Troy, an aloof mastermind, seeks an uncomplicated, clean life but cannot get away from his hatred for the system. Diesel is on the mob's payroll and his interest in his suburban home and his nagging wife is waning. The loose cannon of the trio, Mad Dog, is possessed by true demons within, which lead him from one situation to the next. One more hit, one more jackpot, and they'll all be satisfied. Troy constructs the perfect crime and they pull it off, but in the aftermath, they keep finding the law surrounding them wherever they go.

A book by Mr. Blue. I've heard good things of his work. But never read it. How good was he?
Sure. I'm game for this flick. Never even heard of Dying of the Light.
I like Schrader though. Still need to see his Exorcist.

Additional information and a clip: http://deadline.com/2016/05/dog-eat-...er-1201755927/
EXCLUSIVE: In Paul Schrader’s cinematic universe, Willem Dafoe has played a morally conflicted drug dealer, a senator to a cheating wife, a concentration camp commandant, the brother to Nick Nolte’s crazed News Hampshire denizen in Affliction, Bob Crane’s sex crazed flunky, and even Jesus in the filmmaker’s scripted The Last Temptation of Christ. This time around, Dafoe plays Mad Dog in Schrader’s Dog Eat Dog, an ex-con whose bad tendencies send a kidnapping plot into the toilet. In this clip we see just how mad, Mad Dog can be.
“Paul is a natural critic and commentator- insightful, curious, pragmatic but deep down he’s also emotional and restless. His films are like that,” Dafoe tells Deadline about Schrader.
“He makes it clear what you have to bring to your role and he lets you loose. He’s easy and fun to work with — if he wasn’t I’d be crazy since this is the sixth film I’ve done with him; seventh if you count his writing on The Last Temptation of Christ.“

But count me interested. Defoe was also in another Bunker movie Animal Factory and that was a pretty great movie that went under most people's radar.

I wonder how many times in Paul Schraders career he's had a movie taken away from him and recut by a studio.
Dying of the Light and The Exorcist prequel I know for sure. He might not be at the level of Orson Welles when it comes to studio interference, but I imagine he's been fucked over plenty of times in his career, and has probably dealt with a ton of bullshit. Not a lot of American filmmakers from the 70's not named Scorsese or Spielberg are left standing.

I agree. He is only in a couple of scenes but he plays them very well. Totally different character for him to play. It always cracks me up when I hear him say to Edward Furlong "Now come down here and eat my pussy." Followed by a husky laugh.

Paul Schrader's "Dying of the Light" was taken away from him in editing, and he hates the result so much he's advising audiences to steer clear.

It's ok. It's kind of cool seeing Paul Schrader and Willem Dafoe unhinged. If you have the BD there's a really cool audio commentary by Schrader that is well worth your time.

Anyone want to throw that ending at me? I'm sure I'll figure it out after awhile. But I'm kind of lost right now.
Glad it ended up on Netflix. I enjoyed the whole thing. I have a feeling my movie peeps will slowly find and love it too.

Lol at that pic!!!! Makes me want to watch it. Was there not a real cop car available to pull up for a few seconds? Hell, they could have just called 911 and had the cameras rolling.

Re: Dog Eat Dog (Paul Schrader, 2016) S: Nicolas Cage & Willem Dafoe
I thought the movie was a creative failure, though an interesting failure. It's clear that Schrader let Cage and Dafoe practically ad-lib their scenes.
It comes out on the Blu-ray's special features that Schrader had wanted Cage for the Mad Dog role ultimately played by Dafoe. Cage insisted he play Troy. It's the third lead, unknown actor Christopher Matthew Cook, that turns in a better performance than either Cage or Dafoe. Cage and Dafoe by this point seem to play caricatures of themselves in most roles.
