Iconic Sixth Street Viaduct Bridge in L.A. will be torn down

Maybe the Monument Valley of concrete and seen in over a dozen films.

It's not often that Hollywood loses one of its great icons — an icon whose career spans decades and runs a gamut of some of America's best-known films. From Grease to Terminator 2, from Roadblock to Gone in 60 Seconds, the unlikely star never became a legend despite never really getting top billing.

"It's not the lead character," says Dan Koeppel, a Los Angeles-based author who writes about transportation. "It plays a supporting role, and that's what it should be doing."

The icon, of course, is not an actor at all. It's a bridge: the Sixth Street Bridge, also known as the Sixth Street Viaduct, in LA.

And it's getting torn down, thanks to a kind of concrete cancer called alkali-silica, which is causing too many cracks and crumbles. The bridge was one moderate earthquake away from collapse, according to the California Department of Transportation. Its demolition, which is slated to occur in stages, began on Feb. 5.

Iconic for sure. Repo Man, Wild at Heart, so many films. The plans for what they are replacing it with look lame. They should just rebuild it as similar to the original as possible. I'll never know why new architects think their ideas are better.

Yeah, why can't they replace it with something of a similar design?

NYC has it's twin towers.... L.A. has it's viaduct

It should be classified as a national landmark and preserved.

Maybe they could reassemble the original bridge and put it in a museum somewhere.

Maybe Lake Havasu could use another bridge.

Maybe we can just move forward and build a new bridge. Maybe it will become an icon too.

Here's the new piece of shit, I mean bridge. Note that it accommodates pedestrian traffic, something that doesn't exist in Los Angeles.

I don't think it's iconic, so much as convenient. Like that cave at Bronson Canyon that shows up all the freaking time.

That area has been in resurgent for sometime now. I know this one dude that's been there for awhile rebuilding vintage Porsches and he said a lot of businesses are moving in. There was a sort of farewell party back in January where a bunch of custom rides went over the bridge.

Can you explain the entire project? The height and distance of this bridge doesn't match the old bridge. Where's the L.A. river? Where are all the electric towers? What about buildings?

And all those steps? Fuck that.

All that, and the perspective seems horribly skewed.

I also love how it shows no cars. The architects are so myopic. The old bridge was first and foremost an auto bridge. The new bridge will be as well. But they just love to paint this utopian visions of pedestrians and cyclists.

Yeah, it definitely looks utopian. But if it looks like the drawing I could see it attracting people. I just find that part hard to believe.

Not in that hood. It's nostalgia but that area is not in the great part of town anyway.

I think it's technically East L.A.

I think this was featured in Purple Rain and Prince rode his motorcycle near it.

The movie was set in Minnesota but featured a L.A. landmark?

Odds are unless you live in LA and/or know that bridge it might as well be wherever a film is set.

I thought all bridges like that were 50% something for cars to drive over and 50% something for the homeless to camp under.
