Ok..I have a cheap Apex DVD player..Im sick of it, so I decided to upgrade to SOny with built in dolby digital decoding..

My current reciever is a sony wich does not have a dolby digital decoder/processor

However, there is a 5.1 mode, and dvd mode on the reciever.

Will the decoder in the dvd player do the trick, or do I need a new reciever?

Does your Sony receiver have 6 channel inputs on the back of it? If it does, then you can simply connect the 6 channel outputs (on your DVD player) to those inputs. The DVD player will decode the Dolby Digital sound and pass it decoded to the receiver. If you provide your receiver model number, I'm sure we can give you a simple "yes or no" answer.

If you only want to use Dolby Digital, you will be fine. The sony model you mentioned (STR-DE435) does have the necessary 6 channel inputs (for DD 5.1). Therefore, all you need to do is connect the 6 channel (analog) outputs on your DVD player to your 6 channel inputs on your receiver. Then, instead of choosing "DVD" as your input (on your receiver), select "5.1".

You are now able to enjoy all the benefits of Dolby Digital 5.1 without the need for a new receiver. If you ever want DTS, though, an upgrade will be required.
