'San Andreas' Sequel in the Works From Dwayne Johnson, New Line (Exclusive)
Neil Widener and Gavin James were hired to write the film as the creative team preps a return to the quake zone.
Brace yourselves: New Line and Dwayne Johnson want to make the earth move for you one more time.
The company has hired Neil Widener and Gavin James to write a sequel to San Andreas, the Johnson-starring earthquake disaster movie that grossed over $473 million worldwide last year.
A good chunk of the team is due to return for the second installment. Johnson is swinging back to the sequel as is producer Beau Flynn, producing via his Flynn Picture Co. banner. Brad Peyton, who directed the movie, is also returning.
The 2015 movie saw Johnson as a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot who teams up with his estranged wife (Carla Gugino) to save their daughter (Alexandra Daddario) when a series of quakes crush Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Gugino, Daddario and Paul Giamatti, who played a seismologist, are also expected to return. (Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore as well as Carlton Cuse wrote the original's script.)
Plot details for the new installment are being sheltered, but the sequel is expanding the disaster locales by going global, focusing on the infamous Ring of Fire. The ring circles the Pacific Ocean with fault lines and volcanoes and, according to scientists, is home to about 90 percent of the worlds' earthquakes.
Johnson's production banner, Seven Bucks Productions, will produce in some capacity. Peyton will also act as a producer on the sequel.
Richard Brener, Michael Disco, and Samuel J. Brown are overseeing for New Line. Wendy Jacobson will oversee for FPC.
Widener and James are rising writers who a year ago sold Verona, a reimagining of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with Joe Roth attached to produce, to Sony. More recently they set up the true-story drama Battle for Alcatraz at Paramount with Bridge of Spies' Matt Charman producing.
The duo is repped by CAA, Grandview and attorney Greg Slewett.

I enjoyed the first. This definitely doesn't need a sequel.

Or he's called in to help due to his "experience" during the quake.

I still think a sequel should be The Rock literally fighting nature. Like, using his muscles to suppress a volcano, or kicking a tidal wave back into the ocean.

He just needs to give the earthquake the People's Elbow. That'll stop it.

As I said in the thread for the first film:
And also
...this movie has to be a contender for most forgettable movie ever. I saw the "2015" next to the title and thought "Did the movie really come out this year?" Think of the expense and effort that went in to this film and now it's just 6 months later and it's a completely forgotten piece of shit.
My God! It made $470 million. It's just unbelievable. All that money and no one is running around saying, "Remember that great scene in San Andreas?", "When does it come out on video? I'm getting that shit day one!", "Mom I want San Andreas for Christmas this year, please, please, please."

Whatever they pay her for the sequel will be worth it because it's literally the only fucking thing anyone has to say about the movie.

So which is it? Forgettable entertainment or a complete piece of shit? I tend to remember complete pieces of shit.
The movie did have a weak video apperance though, as you suggested, pulling in something like $36m on combined BD/DVD sales, about $10m less than Mad Max and roughly on par with Pitch Perfect 2.

$450 million bucks at the BO and there isn't a soul alive discussing the film. Deadpool, whatever it's merits, has people talking. San Andreas was like everybody went and then had absolutely nothing to say about it, almost like it deleted from their brain the second they left the theater.

I have no idea what your question is exactly, but my answer is definitely: Forgettable.

Case in point, did you know there was a Cinderella movie that grossed $500m+ last year? Or Rogue Nation for that matter. Or that animated movie Home. Or Divergent: Insurgent.
It's pretty common.

75% of the tix sold for the Cinderella movie were kids, same for Home. I'm sure those films get discussed on the playground, just not so much on movie message boards. My 4 year old dressed up for H'ween in "Cinderella's Wedding Dress" from the movie.
Divergent gets discussed like hell among fans of the book (like my wife who won't shut up about the ending to book three).
