I haven't seen Police Academy in 20 years until a few days ago when it was in HBO. How odd after all this time, then to see him pass. He was as funny as I remember him - feeding the dead goldfish.
RIP.

For some reason I thought he died years ago. I used to watch Punky Brewster when I was a kid. He was already pushing 70 in the mid-80's. Shit. Yeah, he was funny as the senile Police Academy Chief.

The Police Academy curse strikes again (Bubba Smith, David Graf, Andrew Rubin).
Just a few months shy of 99 and married to his wife for 62 years. Quite a full life.

He was in the infamous 1994 version of FANTASTIC FOUR, the one produced on a bargain budget by Roger Corman. And also in a Blaxploitation pic, SLAUGHTER'S BIG RIP-OFF (1973).
He had quite a career:

Just check out this paragraph:
His wife is Allyn Ann McLerie, whom he married the year I was born. I've seen her in tons of movies (PHANTOM OF THE RUE MORGUE, BATTLE CRY, THE COWBOYS, JEREMIAH JOHNSON). She's still alive.
They're both in THE WAY WE WERE, which is on tonight (10PM, EST) on TCM.

Just check out this paragraph:
George Gaynes was born George Jongejans in Helsinki, Finland, on May 16, 1917, to Iya Grigorievna de Gay, a Russian artist later known as Lady Iya Abny, and Gerrit Jongejans, a Dutch businessman. His uncle was the actor Gregory Gaye, who played a Nazi Reichsbank official in “Casablanca.”
Raised in France, England and Switzerland, George was introduced to opera by his mother’s friend, the Russian basso Feodor Chaliapin. He studied in Milan and performed in Italy and France. But his career was interrupted by World War II. He crossed the Pyrenees and was interned in Spain for three months. After being released, he went to Britain and enlisted in the Royal Dutch Navy for the duration.

Don't think I've ever sat thru an installment of Police Academy, and have never watched an episode of Punky Brewster. What I will always remember/associate him with , besides his great turn in Tootsie, was his brief role on General Hospital in 1980. He played the Mob boss who caused Luke and Laura to go "on the run". Epic serial storytelling that was far beyond the typical soap opera paradigm at the time. I was riveted.
He made a very sinister villain, which is almost the antithesis of how most people would know him.

He had an interesting career, and it's cool he sort of 'broke out' in 1984 (with Police Academy and Punky Brewster coming out that same year) at the age of 67.

He was Dr Brewster (in the soap opera in Tootsie) and on Punky Brewster. If only he were cast in Brewster's Millions...

Just heard this today.
I haven't seen a Police Acadamy film in years. I should go back and watch the first.
